Education Compact Group Will Meet; Van Dyke Attending Frank J. Van Dyke, Medford attorney, will attend the annual meeting of the Western Inter state Commission for Higher Education at Cheyenne, Wyom ing, Aug. 8. Van Dyke is one of three com missioners for Oregon appointed by the governor of the commis sion, a 10-staJe and one territory organization which coordinates the exchange of professional students in medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry. Last year more than 100 students from states which do not have facilities in these fields crossed state borders under auspices of the compact. Two Study Projtcts In its role as a fact-finding agency, the Commission cur rently has two study projects one in mental health under a $61,000 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health in the fields of psychiatry, clinical psy chology, phychiatric nursing, and psychiatric social work, and the other in dental manpower through cooperative efforts with the U. S. public health service, the Kellog foundation and the American Dental association. Organized in 1951 and ap proved by President Eisenhower in 1954, the commission has welcomed California, Washing ton, and Alaska into its member ship during the current year. Annual Democratic Picnic on Aug. 14 The annual Jackson County Democratic picnic will be held at TouVelle State park Sunday, I Aug. 14, beginning at noon, ac cording to County Chairman Robert A. Boyer. " He has named Attorney Wil liam V. Deatherage general chairman and Attorney Robert B. Duncan reception committee chairman of the event. Guest speaker will be announced later Other members of the picnic committee include Mrs. Jesse D. Wagner, chairman of the foods committee; Clyde Fichner, prize committee chairman; Larry Sheehan, Mrs. Albert Straus, James Main, Attorney Sidney Ainsworth and Mrs. L. Peers Wilmeth, in charge of arrange ments: and Mrs. Scott Hamilton and Mrs. Edward C. Kelly, in charge of publicity and corre spondence. A program of comedy skits, music and games is being plan ned for the picnic and the public is invited.
