SHARON FRAZIER Medford Launderette CONNIE CATON Crater Lions Club Dolores Del Rio Back in Hollywood Hollywood (U.R) Mexican actress Dolores Del Rio, who has returned to Hollywood after a 12-year absence, blamed some parts of the Mexican press to day for reports she had Commun ist leaning. The 47-year-old beauty, once one of Hollywood's top stars, ar rived by airliner from Mexico City for a week's visit Wednes day and promptly declared she is not now and never has been a Communist. "I ant a Catholic," she said, "and I regard this country as I do my own. I am terribly ex cited and happy to be back." She said reports she had Com munist leanings arose nine months ago when she applied to the U. S. Department of State for a visa to come to Hollywood to appear in a film. Because the visa was slow in being granted, she said some parts of the Mex ican press "jumped to conclu aions." Miss Del Rio said the visa never was denied and the U.S. embassy in Mexico City told her three months ago he could pick up her visa whenever she de aired. She came here to act as maid of honor at Wednesday night's wedding of her friend, wealthy hotelman Hernando Court wright, and Marcelle Eva Cuil lery, prominent Mexico City so cialite. Miss Del Rio, still regarded as Mexico City's top star, said she had made numerous pictures in her native country, Spain and Argentina in the past 12 years. The queen will be picked from eight candidates, seven of whom are pictured on this page. A pic ture of the eighth, masked, Miss X, who is sponsored by Exchange club of Medford, was published previously. Candidates Listed The seven other candidates in clude Cora Mae Gleim, sponsored by the Talent Lions club; Connie Caton, sponsored by Crater Lions club; Sharon Frazier, sponsored by Medford Launderette; Pa tricia Minnis, sponsored by Med ford Junior Chamber of Com merce; Zita Maddox, sponsored by Jacksonville Lions club; Sal ley Walker, sponsored by Med ford Lions' club; and Lee Anne Leach, sponsored by Ashland Junior Chamber of Commerce. The queen's ball will start at 9 p.m. Aug. 3. Weekly prizes have been donated by various merchants in weekly ticket sales contests. Last week. Miss Caton won the prize donated by Pick's Apparel, 112 East Main st, Med ford. The Jubilee caravan, which will visit Jackson and Josephine county communities, will leave Jacksonville Saturday, July 30, at 9:30 a.m. The caravan will tour Phoenix, Talent and Ash- Washington (U.R) President Eisenhower admitted today that some of his Russian associates at the recent summit meeting in Geneva had expressed the hope he would seek reelection. The jubilee this year will in clude three parades, a pageant, various entertainment shows, and several contests, including a log bucking contest, watermelon eating and pie eating contests, and an axe throwing contest. Ike Dunford of Jacksonville 'Lions club is general chairman for the jubilee, with assistance from Floyd Bastwood, Crater Lions club, Herbert Seits. Med ford Lions club, and Frank Delay in Choosing Recreation Site Hit Portiand (U.R) City Com missioner William A. Bowes to day criticized the delay in choosing a site for the proposed S8. 000,000 exposition-recreation center here. Bowes, who returned from an unsuccessful attempt to attract the Junior Chamber of Com merce's 1957 national conven tion to Portland, said the time had come to "get down to the cold facts" about the need for the structure in downtown Port land. The reason he was unable to attract the Jaycee convention, he said, was because of the lack of such a structure close to the downtown area. The 1957 con vention will be held in Milwau kee, Wis. U.S. District Judge William G. East said he made the post ponement in order to allow the AFL teamsters union a chance to intervene as a defendant along with Consolidated. Teamsters a 1 1 o r n ey Wes Franklin said that requiring teamsters to cross picket lines at Coos Bay, Coquille, Norih Bend and Myrtle Point might violate a provision in the union contract with Consolidated which protects them in such labor disputes. The four Safeway stores were struck recently by the Coos Bay local of the AFL meatcutters CIVIL ENGINEER DIES Portland (U.R) Allyne F. Pratt, 67, for 35 years a civil engineer with the city Depart ment of Public Works, died yes terday. He was a brother of the late Multnomah county sheriff Martin Pratt. PATRICIA MINNIS Medford Jaycees In and Around Jacksonville Jacksonville Mr. and Mrs. Guy Garret have sold their home at 700 Academy st. to Mr. Richard J. Anfinson, Portland. The Garrets have moved to their other home at 103 D st. Mrs. Garrett is the guard at the Jack sonville Museum. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reisdorf have purchased a home at Grif fin Creek and are busy remod eling it before moving in. Guy Reed of Denver, Colo., is in Jacksonville this week visit ing at the homes o his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Reed, his sis ters, Mrs. Maude Hardy and Mrs. M. D. Schmidt, and a broth er, Harold Reed. Mr. and Mrs. Don. La Fon of North Oregon st. moved to Gold Hill last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ward and two children are new residents at 603 North Oregon st. He was transferred here from Florence, Ore., and is employed at Jack son Creek mill. Mr. and Mrs. Virgin Cook and three children, Dona, Bunky and Robert, Mulino, Ore., spent Sat urday evening at the Carl Hos kins home. Miss Peggy Cabler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cabler, cele brated her birthday last Friday and had several callers at her home during the day. Mrs. Ethel Beams celebrated her birthday Saturday. Mrs. Richard Gravelle gave a birthday party in honor of her son Ricky, 6, July 22. His guests included Susan Kaer, Jackie and Benny Long, Gayle and Curtis Offenbacher, Virginia Stewert, Sandra and Ernie Knopp, Ricky's cousins: Mike Ford, Medford, Lynn Bradley, Cottage Grove, Bobbie Lamb, and Miss Linda Hardy, who supervised the chil dren and organized their games. Mrs. Archer plans to remain here during the Jackson ville Jubilee and assist her moth er at the Cottage Kitchen. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Purcell and two daughters, Julie and Bridget, Robinsdale, Minn., were afternoon visitors at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Ida Wright, Jacksonville. They also visited the S. M. Purcells In Medford and were en route to Seattle to visit a cousin there before re turning to Minnesota. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Johnston, formerly of Jacksonville now in Gold Hill, were called to Idaho this week due to illness of Mrs. Johnston's father. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lamb and son Bobbie, Phoenix, Ariz., re cently moved here and are tem porarily residing with Mrs. Lamb's mother, Mrs. Anna Rum ley. Mrs. Ida Wright celebrated her 82nd birthday July 25. She had several callers and as lunch eon guests Mrs. Carl Hoskins, Mrs. Daniel Serry and Ricky Gravelle. She received many cards and other remembrances. Mrs. Erwin Boyd and son Larry have just returned from visiting Mrs. Boyd's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Burbank, Calif., and other relatives in Pasadena and Big Bear. House guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Boyd are his sister, Mrs. Fern Hansen and children, and Boyd's father, Em TH v. est (Cap) Boyd, all from Cali fornia. They will all remain here for the Jacksonville Jubilee. Also guests of the Boyds are Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hicks of Coquille, Ore., who will stay indefinitely due to loss of their home in Co quille by fire. They plan to find employment and settle in this vicinity if possible. Dr. Richard L. Patmont, Berk eley, Calif., is a houseguest this week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Berntson. (U.R) Mrs. Bertha Moore, who served as this community's only telephone operator for 52 years, doesn't have a phone in her home. "I don't have any desire for one," the 77-year-old woman said. The Endeavor exchange was converted to dial service several months ago and Mrs. Moore re tired.
