National bank, has been appointed chairman of the Am erican Legion Post 15 civil de fense and disaster relief com mittee, according to Command er Bud Fisher. Huson is a captain in the Na tional Guard, and commands Company "A". He is "very much interested in national and civil defense," Fisher said. Other members of the committee are William McAllister, Cliff Lewis, Charles Cha-nplin, Cliff Ayres, Charles Wiley and Clyde Ficht ner. Fisher recently called on Maj. Gen. Joseph Hicks (USAF, Ret.), the new Civil Defense director for Jackson county, and offered the full cooperation of the post. "I am very glad to have the support of such an organization," General Hicks said. He added that he would use the help of the committee in carrying out the Civil Defense program. The immediate critical need is for airplane spotters to work with the Ground Observer corps. Gen eral Hicks also cited the need for another disaster truck to be used as a supplement to the one in Medford. The entire county should be covered by units train ed for disaster and relief, he said. Discussion of the possibility of obtaining another such disas ter unit is now under way, ac cording to Fisher. He pointed out that the Legion's committee would work closely with existing organizations, and the civil de fense set-up to be prepared for any eventuality. Shortage of Pennies At Bases in Germany Heidelberg, Germany (U.R) The Army appealed to service men and their families today to break open piggy banks and give back pennies. A shortage of one-cent pieces has developed despite shipment of "several million" pennies overseas during the past year, officials said. The penny is the only coin used in American in stallations in West Germany Military scrip is used in all other denominations.
