Personal Health Service By WILLIAM BEADX, MJ. Headers' should address Inquiries to: Dr. William Brady 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. Malnutrition Sneaks Up On You Before the Second World War a third of the population of the British Isles existed on diets con taining insufficient vitamin B. Probably nutrition was no bet ter here. After war began the British government required the millers to leave 85 per cent of the wheat in the flour. Aside from the mild restriction this placed on the criminal waste of food for the production of white flour, it re stored to consumers in Britain a good deal more of the vitamins end minerals removed from wheat in the refining process than we do in that snide product called "enriched flour. Many mild clinical cases of vitamin Bl deficiency have es caped notice because some doc tors (I quote this sentence from Bignell & Prescott's The Vita mins in Medicine) wait for the appearance of full-blown beri beri ... -. Until or unless you can work up a full-blown case of beri-beri the doctor can give yon "shots" of something or other to keep you from wondering what ails you. 1 It is against my Hippocratic principles to tell readers which symptoms indicate what disease or vice versa. But I believe it can do no harm and may do much .good to mention the com mon manifestations of vitamin B deficiency, which most Amer icans have because they get most of their calories from refined white flour and refined white sugar the namby-pambies. Fatigue. Dyspepsia. Palpita tion. Breathlessness. Slight swel ling around the ankles. Pain pro duced by squeezing the calf muscles. Pins and needles sen sations in hands, arms, feet or or legs. Distension of veins in neck and arms. Squatting on the heels is painful and perhaps you can't rise without using your hands. .Inability to concentrate, defective memory, nervous irri tability and anxiety. Diminished inclination to perform accust omed work. ' Today it is difficult even for the expert to select food which will supply the minimum daily requirement of Vitamin B that is the amount necessary to pre vent these manifestations of de ficiency from the bewildering array of pretty packages of ready-cooked, ready-to-serve, pas teurized, sugarized and maybe accepted yet by the AMA. . Various investigators have no ticed these psychological mani festations in human volunteers who ate only foods extremely poor in vitamin Bl. Intolerance to noise, inability to concentrate, inattention to de tails, nervous irritability, mem ory defects, anxiety, insomnia, diminished inclination to per form customary work. Being nutty, I readily imagine I have most of these manifesta tions myself, so you needn't wor ry if the description hits your case. Do as I do eat some extra vitamin B daily to supplement your refined namby-pamby Yan kee diet. Floating Island of fered them a perfect umbrella to shut out the sun. It was a feasting ground for many va rieties of fish that would nose about the base of the island for worms and insects that bad dug down too far. .. The Island varied in thickness from two to five feet. In the dry season, it would sit about two feet above water level. But when the rains came, it would grow heavy and drop about a foot. Its surface was covered with small trees and bushes on a base of earth and moss, and the walking was treacherous. The swampy bottom on a number of occasions had collapsed beneath careless sportsmen. ' Local records mention the is land as existing as far back as , 1876. But legend dates it as at least a century old. "For that matter," said one oldtimer, "it may have been there a cpuple hundred years." The island's location changed without any special pattern. It usually rested near the southern end of the pond. But an espe cially windy winter would find it , driven far to the northern corner. However, it often mean dered about with no justifiable) reason.
