July 12. 1953 Society and Clubs Installations Slated for Sojourners Club Officers Installation of officers will be the main business at a meeting Thursday, July 14 for members of the Medford Sojourners club when they will convene at 1 pjn., at the Medford hotel. An invi tation is extended from the club to all inactive members and to all newcomers in the valley. Persons who have lived in the vi cinity for less than two years are eligible to join the group. purely The organization is social and its main purpose is to acquaint newcomers with other persons who live here. More information may be had by telephone 3-4277. At a meeting of the group held in late June the officers who will be installed were elect ed. The incoming president is Relatives Visit At Guthrie Home Several relatives of Mrs. Rob ert Guthrie, 1642 Rridgeway dr., have left after visiting Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie for the week. They are Mrs. Harriet Haswell, Mrs. Guthrie's mother; her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. : William Kroll, and the Krolli' son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard Jacobson. Mrs. Haskell, a former longtime resident' of Medford, now lives at Tillamook. The Krolls and Jacobsons live in Los Angeles. This was their first visit to Oregon. Sew-Easy, Pretty! Mrs. John Mansfield, and the first vice-president, Mrs. M. H. Parsons. Mrs. Carl Chris tenson will be the second vice-president, Mrs. Bob R. Hart, secretary, and Mrs. Archer James, treasurer. Hostesses for the recent meet ing were Mrs. H. W. Sturgeon, Mrs. Wendell Stalker and Mrs. Douglas Hinesly. Mrs. James and Mrs. Etta Pryor won game prizes and birthday congratula tions were extended to Mrs. F. E. English. Mrs. Clarence Seeden was introduced as a new mem ber. Those who attended for the first time were Mrs. Edwin Har per, Mrs. Lawrence McConnell, Mrs. William Jensen and Mrs. Monte Strain. Card prizes were won by Mrs. Jack Weddle and Mrs. William Riley, pinochle; Mrs. William K. Jensen and Mrs. Roy Smal ley, canasta, and Mrs. Eugene Ricker and Mrs. Cecil Michol son, bridge. First National Bank Employees Set Sunday Picnic Employees of the four valley First National bank branches and their families will meet Sunday at Jackson Hot springs for a picnic. The event will get under way at 12:30 p.m. Richard Miller is chairman of the event; Mrs. Helen Oaks is in charge of the arrangements for the lunch, -and entertain ment is being planned by Paul Dimick and Bob Lane. Rogue Rangers To Elect Officers The Rogue Rangers riding club will meet Wednesday, July 13, to elect officers for the com ing year. Several events have occupied the group in past weeks. About 40 attended a "Sadie Hawkins" party held recently at the home of Mrs. Floyd Gibson. Eight join ed the Trail Riders in an over night ride into the Dry Creek region, and some 30 Rangers rode to the top of Roxy Ann last Tuesday for a sack lunch picnic. An invitation has been extend ed the Rangers by the Jackson County Sheriff's Posse to join the annual parade July 30. Ten tative plans are being made for an August 13 ride to Oregon Caves.. Mrs. Robert Beeman Will Be Honored at Butte Falls Tea Butte . Falls Mrs. Robert Beeman of Wenatchee, Wash., will be guest of honor at an in formal tea to be given by Mrs. Brittain Ash at her home at the Butte Falls Ranger station on Thursday, July 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. All of Mrs. Beeman's friends are cordially invited. Mrs. Beeman is a former Butte Falls resident; Mays Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wayne May and daughters, Stephanie and'Mich- ele, Philadelphia, Pa., arrived Saturday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. E. (U.B A HeW 1 "queen" reigned over Hollywood today blonde actress Kay Williams. Miss Williams became the fifth wife of Clark Gable, the graying, hp-man actor known as "the king," in a spur of the moment ceremony performed by a justice of the peace here Monday . After the brief ceremony, the newlyweds left for a honeymoon at an undisclosed destination, possibly Gable's secluded cabin on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Long Friendship The marriage climaxed 13 years of friendship between the 54-year-old Gable and Miss Wil liams, 37, whose battles in court and otherwise with her former husband, millionaire -playboy Adolph Spreckels H, made Hol lywood history- Gable and Miss Williams al ways insisted they had no inten tions of marrying. However, anonymous tipsters had, tele phoned news agencies in the last two weeks that they might be wed soon. They got their marriage li cense only minutes before ap pearing before Justice of the Peace Walter Fischer. They were accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth Williams Nesser of Los Angeles and Mr. and Mrs. Albert S. Men asco of St. Helena, Calif. . Mrs. Nesser was matron of honor and Menasco was the best man. Gable has a cabin at Lake Tahoe, where he often spends week ends hunting and fishing in the early summer. He estab lished residence there three years ago to obtain a divorce from his fourth wife, Lady Syl via Ashley. Gable and Miss Williams made headlines in 1951 when 'Spreck els testified in a pre-divorce trial hearing that she told him she had been intimate with Gable. Miss Williams denied the accu sation. Previous Marriages Gable's previous wives were drama coach. Josephine Dillon, Reah Langham, actress Carole Lombard, who was killed in a 1941 plane crash, and Lady Ash ley, whom he married in 1949 and divorced in 1952, after re portedly settling $150,000 on her. Miss Williams, originally from Erie, Pa., was married briefly in 1942 to Argentine sportsman Martin de Alzaga Unzue. In 1945 she married Spreckels and di vorced him seven years later. During a series of stormy court battles, she accused him of beat ing her, chopping down her door and using abusive language. In August, 1953, Spreckels beat her so severely with a shoe that she had to go to a hospital. He spent 30 days in jail for as sault. ' She won custody of their two children, JOan 4Vi, and Adolph III, 6, during the divorce. These figures are reported in "Cotton Counts its Customers," a study published by the Cotton Councils market research partment. de Smullins Hosts At Patio Party Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smullin were hosts Friday evening at a patio barbecue dinner party at their summer home, Hilltop ranch, on Coker Butte. About 24 friends attended.' Mr. Smullin is connected with KBES-TV here and KIEM-TV in Eureka, Calif.
