Dr. Hexlock Post Graduate Laziness Only Temporary Reaction ,yter graduating, many stu dents are physically and ner vously exhausted from the strain and excitement of their last days in school. Parents should recognize this and not expect too much too soon. That is the advice I am .giving the fath er who wrote: ( Q) "Our daughter graduated from high school last week. Since then, all she has done is sleep late in the mornings.. go out to some party or other in the afternoon and then have dates in the evening. She is going to college in the fall and I want her to help her mother with the home this sum mer. My wife has not been too well this past year, but she has been working hard, in spite of how she feels, to spare our daughter from housework so she could study and get ready for college. For the past month, she has been going to parties at school and with her friends. This has meant late hours and extra work fqr my wife. I think it is time now for our daugther to give her mother a rest and help her more with the work. When I talk to her about this, she com plains that none of the other girls have to miss the fun by working at home. Are all young people thoughtless and selfish today? (A) Most teenagers of today, as was true when you and your wife were teenagers, are self- centered. They feel that the world revolves around them and this is encouraged by all the fuss and excitement that marks the end of their school careers. Give your daughter a week or so more to get rested from the strain of graduating and let her have some fun with her friends before they all begin to settle down to summehr jobs or work they will do from now on. Then you will find that your daughter will not be on the go all the time and will be willing to help more in the home. It is quite usual for students to have a round of parties to "celebrate" the end of their school days. But, this lasts only a short time and then you will find? that more serious matters begin to claim their time and at- tention. Then your daughter will be less occupied with her friends and will begin to realize that she owes something to her fam ily for making these good times possible. Be patient and things will work out all right for you. (Copyright, 1955. General Features Corp.) HARROWING THOUGHT Mt. Sunapee, N.H. OJ.R) Skiers were a little surprised when a snow tractor with a har row behind it started running over the slopes here. But Mr. Sunapee State Park Manager Dick Parker explained he was using a new method to break up boiler-plate show and turn glass slick surfaces into good skiing. Parker also said he treats icy patches with salt to make fresh powder snow stick to the slick sections of trails. Clearwater, Fla.
