rOOTTEEW MEDrOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Rams Have New Faces This Season Portland The Los Angeles Rams, having undergone a coach ing shakeup, will also present many new faces among their player personnel when they ap pear here in two pre-season tilts in August. They meet the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday night, Aug ust 6, and the New York Giants Sunday night, August 28. Both games are billed under the lights at Multnomah stadium. However, Sid Gilman. the "freshman" coach from Cincin nati U., will rely mainly on Ram veterans to carry the bulk of the load in both games, while testing rookies only if the op portunity arises. Foremost- among . the "old guard" is Norm Van Brocklin, the Oregon Ail-American who is ready to start his seventh year in the National football league. Van won the " NFL passing championship for the third time last year. He's rated the finest passer in football today and one of the greatest "long-ball" throw ers in the history of the game. Boyd, Fears. Back Two of Van's favorite receiv ers. Bob Boyd and Tom Fears will be back at ends. In the backfield there will be Skeet Quinlan and Tank Younger. To help Van at the quarterback slot will be Billy Wade, who had a ensational rookie year in 1954. Van Brocklin is the chief at traction in Portland, scene of some of his greatest collegiate triumphs, and Promoter Harry Glickman credits him with hav ing made the city the strongest pro-football town in the country outside those in the league itself. The mail-order advance is the heaviest ever, according to Ore gon Sports attractions, which ex pects crowds this year to ex ceed those of the past. Medford Gun Club Idle On Holiday Week End There will be no shooting at Medford Gun club over the forthcoming holiday week end, members reported today. Activity is to be resumed on July 10 when practice is planned. Members will also be in the midst of preparations for the Grand Pacific shoot of the Paci fic International Trapshooting association. Medford will be host to the big shoot for several western states and British Co lumbia from June 20 through 24. TO ASK NEW CODE : Harrisburg, Pa. (U.R) Gov. George M. Leader said today the Pennsylvania Legislature will be asked to approve a new box ing code after a current inves tigation of the sport is complet ed. The investigation stemmed from a fight between Harold Johnson and Julio Maderos last month in which Johnson col lapsed on his stool after the sec ond round. Mo. -JU.R) Stan (The Man) Musial, who already has passed two major milestones in his career this season, had another within his immediate range today 10th place in the all-time major league home run standings. The Cardinal slugger came through last night with his 2500th maior league hit, a home run which was his second hit of the game in a 9-5 victory over Cincinnati. He became the 28th player in the modern era of base ball to pass that total. Last June 12 against the Giants, Musial hit his 10th horns run to give him a total of 302 for his career, putting him into a tie with Rogers Hornsby in the lifetime rankings. Manly Stanley, who now has 15 homers for the season and 307 for his career, will pass Al Simmons, the No. 10 man in the all-time home run derby, with his next route clout. Baker, Lockman Take Poll Leads Chicago (U.R) Second baseman Gene Baker of the Chi cago Cubs and leftfielder Whitey Lockman of the New York Giants took over leading posi tions today in the All-Star base ball poll which ends at midnight Friday. With about 4 million votes already tabulated, a new voting record appeared in the making. The present record of 4,637,743 was established in 1949. In the latest tabulations to pick the eight starters for the American and National leagues in the All-Star game at Milwau kee July 12, Baker pulled ahead of Red Schoendienst of the St. Louis Cardinals by 7,682. Lock man took first place in the left field balloting from Del Ennis of the Philadelphia Phillies by 6,212 votes. Northwest Loop Talks Splitting of Schedule Yakima (U.R) Directors of the Northwest League will meet here tomorrow to talk over the possibility of adopting a split schedule for the current 1955 season, President Babe Holling berry said today. Green Bay, Wis. (U.R) Middle guard Bill Forester, a former Southern Methodist star. has signed his 1955 contract with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football league. Yugoslavs Organize Welcome for Nehru . Belgrade, Yugoslavia (U.R) The Yugoslav government or ganized a rousing welcome for "our good friend" Prime Min ister Jawaharlal Nehru who- ar rives today on a week-long state visit. (International) Aussies Defeat Trabert, Seixas , Wimbledon, England (U.R) Louise Brough and Beverly Baker Fleiz reached the wo men's singles final today at the Wimbledon championships but top-seeded Tony Trabert and Vic Seixas were ousted by Australia's Ken Rosewall and Neale Fraser in the men's doubles semi-finals. Wednesday Trabert easily defeated Budge Patty of Los Angeles, 8-6. 6-2, 6-2 in an all-American semi-final. Brovia Bought By Cincinnati Cincinnati (U.R) Outfield er Joe Brovia, who is hitting .336 for Oakland in the Pacific Coast league, was purchased to day by the Cincinnati Redlegs and probably will be used main ly as a pinchhitter, according to General Manager Gabe Paul. Brovia stands 6 feet, 3 inches, and weighs 210 pounds. Gen. Taylor Becomes Army Chief of Staff Washington '(U.R) Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, World War II paratroop commander and a Korean War leader, became the Army's new chief of staff today. The 53-year-old general, whose World War II bravery has been singled out for praise by Presi dent Eisenhower, took the oath of office to succeed Gen. Mat thew B. Ridgway. Ridgway, 60, was retired yes terday at a colorful ceremony featuring marching soldiers and an aerial parade at nearby Fort Myer, Va. Salary Increase Means $2,750,000 to Portland Portland (U.R) Portland will receive about $2,750,000 in new federal money each year be cause of 7V-cent pay increases for federal employees signed by President Eisenhower and a post al pay boost granted earlier, a Labor Department spokesman said today. Lemley collected 28 points at the last meeting at' the posse grounds oval to boost his over all total to 113. However, Deutschman duplicated the 28 and retained his second place spot with an 111 aggregate, stay ing just two counters behind the leader. Their nearest rival for season laurels is Elmer Sisemore who now boasts 89. Monte Hall is fourth with 84 and Lou Donelan and Cecil James are tied for fifth with 76 apiece. Other top point men are Bob Wilcox 70, Neil Wooldridge 56, Bud Hurt 55, Bob Jenkins 46, Harold McGrath 44 and Lou Kurz, Jim Stanley and White Dage each 43. Christie Enters This Saturday's program will be featured by the debut of Bob Christie, Grants Pass, in hard tops. Christie, well-known in auto racing circles, has skip pered just about every kind of car but a hardtop. He holds the American Automobile associa tion record for 150 miles on a half-mile track- for stock cars and has entered the Mexican road race three time. In 1953 he was third in National AAA standing in a Nash. In the Medford race he'll pilot M39 for Vic Surroz, Nash car dealer here. Elmer Sisemore. who has been behind the wheel of M39 in other competitions here, reportedly will be driving another car. A regular racing program of neat races, A and B trophy dashes and A and B mains is planned. Time trials will start at 7 p.m. with the first race to begin at 8 p.m. Summer Baseball Attendance High Medford school's summer baseball instruction program has an all-time high enroll ment of 350 boys. Supervisor Lee Ragsdale reported today. He said the record for a single day's attendance was set last Thursday when 307 boys were on hand. Since then only about 250 boys have been on hand. Ragsdale attributed the drop to cool weather and anticipated a pick up in attendance when temperatures are warmer. New Peace Ship Request Goes Beore Congress Washington U.R) A new request for an atomic merchant "peace ship" went to Congress from President Eisenhower to day. Mr. Eisenhower's new plea came shortly after he received from Congress yesterday an atomic construction bill lacking money for the ship. Mr. Eisenhower told his news conference it would be a mis take to' abandon the ship pro posal. He said it could be very important in demonstrating to the rest of the world that the atom can be harnessed for peace time uses.
