Pear Blight Seen In County; Spray Advice is Given Limited outbreaks of pear blight are occurring in some pear orchards, according to D W. Berry, Jackson county ex tension agent. The disease is a bacteria which kills blossoms, twigs, and under epidemic conditions, is capable o killing the entire pear tree, Berry said. Berry suggested that all fruit 'growers check their orchards carefully for signs of the blight If only limited infections are discovered they should be re' moved with surgery. Severe out breaks, if on pear varieties tol erant to fixed coppers, should be sprayed or dusted with cop per dust. Berry added that second spray for the control of cherry fruit fly should be applied by July 1, except on early varieties which will be picked soon. On most varieties, a second spray will be necessary for the control of worms. The recommended spray is three pounds of methoxychlo per 100 gallons of water, or for smaller quantities, a heaping tablespoon in two gallons. Mai- thion can be added if aphids are showing up. Cherries should not be eaten for a week after being sprayed, Berry said.
