Pear Blight Seen
In County; Spray
Advice is Given
Limited outbreaks of pear
blight are occurring in some
pear orchards, according to D
W. Berry, Jackson county ex
tension agent.
The disease is a bacteria which
kills blossoms, twigs, and under
epidemic conditions, is capable
o killing the entire pear tree,
Berry said.
Berry suggested that all fruit
'growers check their orchards
carefully for signs of the blight
If only limited infections are
discovered they should be re'
moved with surgery. Severe out
breaks, if on pear varieties tol
erant to fixed coppers, should
be sprayed or dusted with cop
per dust.
Berry added that second spray
for the control of cherry fruit
fly should be applied by July 1,
except on early varieties which
will be picked soon. On most
varieties, a second spray will be
necessary for the control of
worms.
The recommended spray is
three pounds of methoxychlo
per 100 gallons of water, or for
smaller quantities, a heaping
tablespoon in two gallons. Mai-
thion can be added if aphids are
showing up.
Cherries should not be eaten
for a week after being sprayed,
Berry said.

Poultry Processing
Plants in Oregon
Expected To Close
Portland (U.R) Poultry
processing plants -in Oregon and
Clark county, Wash., were ex
pected to close down today in
sympathy to a Portland plant
struck by AFL egg candlers and
poultry workers.
The union began picketing
Northwest Poultry, Dairy &
Products Company yesterday in
a dispute over a wage increase
demanded by employees. Other
operators took the currently
popular ' management position
that "a strike against one is a
strike against all" ' and threat
ened . to shut down unless the
dispute were settled. .
The threatened tie-up would
effect some 600 employees at 15
plants in Oregon, five of which
were in the Portland area; Small
non-union plants, and the .Swift
& Company operation at Eugene
would probably be .the only
plants open. ; ' -'"
The union has demanded a IVi-
cent hourly wage increase im
mediately, and a 2Vfc-cent raise
after six months. Employers of
fered 7v4-cents now, and five
cents after a year. "
