New York (U.P.) An impressive victory by eith er champion in their nationally televised and broadcast 15- Giammalva Goes On in Net Fray Chapel Hill, N.C. (U.R) Top seeded Sammy Giammalva of the University of Texas, contin uing his advance through the 71st annual NCAA tennis cham pionships, met Bill Demas of California in today's fourth round of the tournament. All seven remaining seeded players advanced Tuesday but third-seeded Jacque Grigry of Southern California and fifth seeded Bill Quillian of Washing ton were extended to three sets. Grigry dropped his first set to Ellis Bryant of Arizona 5-7 but took the next two 6-2. 6-2. Quil lian bowed to Dick Rasking of Yale 4-6 but bounced back to Win 6-1, 6-0. Gimmalva beat Gary Peterson ef Arizona 6-2, 6-2, and second seeded Clifton Mayne beat Big 10 champion Warren Mueller of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Jack Frost of Stanford dis- posed of Bobby Green of Duke 6-0, 6-1. SIGNS 10TH SEASON Cleveland, Ohio U.R) Lou (The Toe) Groza, one of the Cleveland Browns' charter mem bers, has signed for his 10th sea son in the National Football League. Groza was the team's leading scorer last year, amass ing 84 points on place kicks and conversions. rounder at the Polo grounds might clinch a September shot at Rocky Marciano's heavy weight title. That's what promot er Jim Norris said. The weather bureau's forecast of a fine night "fair and slightly cooler" strengthened the promoter's hopes for more than 25,000 fans and $250,000. An additional $100,000 will be received for the TV-radio pre sentation over ABC networks at 6 p.m. (PST). Moore, a well-traveled Negro who now lists his home at San Diego, Calif., should earn about $90,000. Hawaiian-born Olson of San Francisco should receive about $82,500. Those purses would be the largest of their careers. Top Heavyweight Contender Despite Moore's age, the king of the 175-pound division is gen erally considered one of the most formidable men in the ring to day. He is recognized as top contender for. Rocky Marciano's heavyweight crown by the In ternational "Committee of World Professional Boxing Champ ionships." Were it not for the suspicions that he may have weakened him self in paring down to the 175 pound limit from the 196V2 pounds he registered on May 2, he would be a prohibitive fav orite at 8-1 or higher over the 160-pound champion. However, 26-year-old Olson's youth, speed and aggressiveness seem to give him a chance to become the second man in ring history to win the middleweight and lightheavy crowns. Only the late Bob Fitzsimmons achieved the feat back in 1903. Fitzsim mons also won the heavyweight title. Olson to Carry Fight Olson, an adroit bob-weaver, apparently will carry the fight to ancient Archie, who prefers now to stand flat-footed in a semi-crouch and let the oppon ent come into him. Training for this fight, Moore concentrated on a "lifting" counter-attack of up- percuts and shovel-hooks to straighten up the close-quarter specialist from San Francisco. In addition, Moore has a dang erous straight "sneaker" right to the head, and a withering two fisted body attack. Prematurely balding Olson indicated in training he will ply the nearly stationary Moore with a persistent torrent of leather, and meanwhile try to avoid Ar chie's fists by slipping, weaving and bobbing. He and manager Sid Flaherty believe veteran Ar chie will tire under the pace and become nearly helpless in the late going. Olson's middleweight title will not be at stake tonight; but it will be vacated immediately if he wins the lightheavy crown. Golfers Tune For Tourney At Portland Portland (U.R) Favorites of the fairways from throughout the nation took their final prac tice licks today for the $15,000, 72-hole Western Open which starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday at the Portland Golf Club. Slammin' Sammy Snead, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, Tommy Bolt, Julius Boros, Gene Littler, Doug Ford. Gardiner Dickinson Jr., and. Ted Kroll were among the favorites as some 180 golfers were on hand for the four-day event. Snead, who turned in a 64 with three eagles Monday in a prac tice round, had trouble with his putting yesterday and was over par. Most of the entries didn't turn in scores, but Bolt fashioned a 67 and Celestino Tugot, the Philippine champion, shot a 66. Fleck Not Entered Two finalists in the recent Na tional Open were not present. Open Champ Jack Fleck flew home to a welcome in Daven port, la., while the man he de feated, Ben Hogan, did not enter. Host pro Larry Lamberger said he believed a 275 score for the 72-hole tournament would be enough to win. Hogan shot a record 261 here in the 1945 Portland Open but Byron Nelson who finished second, was 14 strokes behind. Lloyd Mangrum, who won the Western Open in a playoff in Cincinnati last year, is not com peting this year due to a rib in jury. The Western Open starts at 7 a.m. PST tomorrow with 18 holes scheduled each day through Sunday. LEMON CHUCKS 1 0th VICTORY FOR TRIBE; NEWK POSTS 12th WIN; NY GIANTS LOSE AGAIN Whitey Lockman On Top in Voting Chicago (U.R) Handyman Whitey Lockman of the New York Giants took over the lead today as the fans' choice for the left field berth on the National League All-Star baseball team. The first baseman-outfielder replaced Bob Speake of the Chi cago Cubs by 11,654 votes in the latest tabulation in the annual poll. Lockman had 151,886 votes compared to Speake's 140,232. Speake, even though he has been sitting on the bench in recent weeks, had taken over the lead earlier on the strength of his early-season showing. The Cubs, however, still have three of the eight leading posi tions second baseman Gene Baker, third baseman Randy Jackson and shortstop Ernie Banks. The voting ,to select the start ing teams for the All-Star game at Milwaukee July 12, will end July 1. West Michigan Pitcher Signed K.ansas City, Mo. Note that Sunny Brook smile I By CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Sports Writer Bob Lemon, Cleveland's pitch ing peach, was half-way toward his seventh 20-victory season to day, a goal which would make him baseball's most consistant big winner since the heyday of ol' Robert Moses Grove 20 years ago. - No other pitcher has had that many 20-victory seasons since Grove, the great Philadelphia lefty, did it for the eighth time in 1935. And if Lemon makes it he will be in a select group of im mortals headed by Christy Matt hewson with 13, Walter Johnson 12, Pete Alexander 9, Eddie Plank 8, and iron man Joe Mc Ginnity 7. Of all pitchers in the modern era of baseball since 1900, those are the only ones who surpass Lemon now. For an uneasy moment last night when he became the first American League pitcher to win 10 games with a 3-1 job over Baltimore, it looked as if Lem on with his margin of triumph on's chances were in jeopardy because he injured his left thigh baserunning in the seventh. Pitcher Ray Narleski replaced him and held the Orioles. Later, it developed that Lemon's injury was slight and he will miss no action. Al Smith provided Lem with a two-run homer.
