'Champagne Lady' To Resume Singing Following Ordeal Hollywood U.R) "Cham pagne Lady" Alice Lon said she would return to sing with Law rence Weill's orchestra tonight despite the recent outrage of having three masked men rip off her cloths and photograph her in the nude. The singer, though still shaken from the six-hour reign of ter ror at her home early Sunday, said she would return for her appearance at a beach ballroom with the band because "the show must go on." On Verg of Breakdown Some friends reported, how ever, she was on the verge of a breakdown because of her or deal. Meanwhile, a lie detector test indicated hotel bus boy Joseph M. Cannon, 25, was telling the truth when he denied being one of the three men who invaded the singer's home and beat her and members of her family. - "Erratic Patterns' Cannon voluntarily submitted to the lie detector test to prove he was telling the truth when be denied taking part in the inci dent. At the conclusion of the test yesterday, Detective P. A. Poe said "all indications show he is telling the truth." However, Sgt. Ray Willis, who gave the examination, said there were some "erratic patterns" he wanted to study further. Cannon remained in custody. T -Thiiiim m I JkYw I ALICE LON 'Show Must Go On' Honey Claimed Cure For Alcohol Hangover New York U.R) A new cure for a hangover was offered to day by the journal of the Ameri can Medical Women's Associa-J tion honey. "Honey contains a large amount of fructose which has been found to promote the meta bolism of alcohol," the journal said in an article on the treat ment and rehabilitation of alco hol addicts. "The fructose-alcohol reaction has also a 'sobering up' and sedative effect on the patient . . . Woman's Plea Fails To Sway Magistrate Des Moines, la. (U.R) Mrs. Robert C. Bell complained to Judge Howard Brooks that if he fined her $20 on a speeding charge her husband wouldn't let her drive the car for 20 days. , "Make him do his own cooking for 20 days," the judge said, and imposed the fine. Portland Pinball Seizure Forbidden Portland .(U.R) The pin ball question here was back in the. courts today. Judge Alfred P. Dobson yes terday afternoon issued a re straining order forbidding seiz ure of any "non-coin-in-the-slot" amusement devices. A hearing on whether a temporary injunc tion should be issued was set for next Monday afternoon. Police Chief Jim Purcell or dered his officers to stop seiz ing machines yesterday and made 11 arrests. Five of the ma chines were found on sidewalks. It was believed the cases would not come up for trial until after Monday's hearing. The hearing could set off another round of appeals to higher courts. Portland's anti-pinball law was upheld by the U. S. Su preme Court. Chief Purcell's order indicated enforcement against coin-in- the slot machines would continue. DAV Delegates Leave For State Convention Delegates from the Jackson county chapter of the Disabled American Veterans left yester day to attend the annual state DAV convention in Tillamook, starting tdoay and concluding Saturday. The delegates include George Simmons, a state executive com mitteeman; James Lillie, hos pital chairman and VAVS repre sentative for the chapter, and Mrs. Lillie; and Pat Graham, chapter adjutant, service officer and state' publicity director, and his wife and daughter. The' DAV service office at 1515 North Riverside ave. will be closed while Graham is away, and while he and his family take a few days vacation after the convention. Evangelist RONALD SITTSER Warren Honored By Degree at Pittsburgh (U.R) Chief Jus tice Earl Warren of the U.S. Supreme Court received an hon orary doctor of laws degree to day from the University of Pitts burgh during commencement exercises at which the university also honored its own polio re searcher, Dr. Jonas E. Salk. Mr. Warren was cited for his services to the legal profession and to humanity. Salk's doctor of laws degree, in honor of his work in develop ing the world-famous "polio vac cine, was the first of two he was to receive today. After the Pitt exercises, he will fly to New York where he will be cited by the City .College of New York, from which he was graduated in 1934. Wednesday. June 15, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBU1W THREE Portland Teamsters To Vote on Contract Portland (U.R) Some 800 Portland members of the AFL Teamsters union will vote Fri day on a contract agreement offered by some 112 area dray age firms. Nature of the offer was not disclosed. Federal Mediator George Wal ker said the short-haul truckers had asked for the same pay in creases recently granted long haul drivers in the 11. Western states. They also asked for a nine cent hourly increase to bring their scale to the level of the other drivers. Long-haul truckers, who were on strike for several weeks, were granted "a three-year, 25 cent pay package. Watkins said today that President Eisenhower's pro posals for liberalizing the refu gee immigration program face an uphill fight in the Senate. The Utah' Republican said there is "terrific opposition." And Chairman William Langer (R-N.D.) disclosed that letters and telegrams to the Senate Refugee Subcommittee were run ning 20 to 1 against relaxing any restrictions in the present law. But Watkins said he favors the administration - sponsored changes and will wage an all out fight for them. Langer also favors liberalizing the present law. Watkins guided the present law through the senate against strong opposition in 1953.
