TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, June 9, I95S State Senator Is Speaker for League Session State Senator Philip Lowry, speaking for Medford League of Women Voter's June luncheon, credited the Oregon league with the passage of the redisricting bill and the meat inspection bill during the 1955 session. The meeting was at Rogue Valley Country club and Mrs. Hugh Collins introduced Senator Low ry. The senator discussed the as complishments of the 1955 leg islative session, the problems under which the members work ed this session and some of the problems which will face the next session. Mrs. Fred Carr, Mrs. Lucille Foster, Mrs. John S. Day and Mrs. Robert Hiatt reported on the state convention. Next general meeting of the league will be a membership luncheon in July at the site of Mrs. Day's new home at Table. Rock estate. Grubb has return ed to this country after spending 23 months in the Marshall is lands with the Atomic Energy commission of the United States and is spending a brief vacation with his mother, Mrs. Bert R. El liott and Dr. Elliott at their home on Route 2. He plans to attend summer school at Oregon State college be ginning June 20, and in the fall will enroll at OSC in forestry. E. Harder, Old Stage road, have returned from a three-day trip to San Francisco. They were guests at the St. Francis hotel during their visit. Dr. and Mrs. Elliott recently returned home after spending several months in travel abroad They made the Bible land tour of the Christian Herald of New York. visiting 14 countries and island groups. This includes Ma deria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. In addition to the usual sight seeing programs the party visit ed American missionary centers, college and universities. In Israel the group was greeted personal ly by President Ben-Zevi. Much time was spent in the place where Jesus lived, taught and preached and a highlight of the tour was a sunrise Easter communion service at Gordon's Garden tomb in the suburbs of old Jerusalem, near Golgotha, or the Place of the Skull. Despite rumors circulating in this country, the members of the Bible land tour encountered no travel difficulties, a Christian Herald release states, and they witnessed no evidence of con flict in any country visited. . Progress in farming, manu facturing and in living stand ards was noted in some places though much of the life in the countries Jesus knew is about the same as it was 2,000 years ago, the release states. The Elliotts spend a month traveling in Canada, where Dr. Elliott has many relatives, after returning to this continent. cietty Posse and Troop Hold Dinner Sunday At Gonzales Home Talent About 45 persons at tended a dinner party Sunday afternoon as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gonzales, Talent. The event, held on the patio of the Gonzales home, was for mem bers of the Ladies Mounted troop, Jackson County Mounted Sheriff's posses, their husbands and wives and invited guests. Mr. Gonzales cooked the steaks served for the dinner and the evening was spent playing cards. Assisting the couple were Mrs. Mary H. Brown, Mrs. Clarence Dodge,. Mrs. Birdie Swearingen and Mrs. Dory Hart. Scout Day Camp Needs Volunteer Adult Workers' The annual Girl Scout day camp program opened Monday with a registration of 257, ac cording to an announcement from scout headquarters. Due to the large enrollment, more adult help is needed. Women who can assist are asked to call the Scout house, telephone 2-5912. A program of games, hikes and other activities is planned each day, and the girls learn outdoor cookery and other camp skills. Junior Club Plans Picnic on Saturday Junior Degree of Honor club will meet Saturday, June 11, in Hawthorne park back of the Scout house. The meeting will be a picnic from 2 to 4 p.m. Mrs. H. G. Wilson, states that members may take guests to the meeting. Bank Employees -Form Social Club The First National Bank club, a social organization for em ployees of the four branches of the First National bank in this area, was organized at meeting last Friday. About 135 employees make up the group from the branches in Grants Pass, Ash land, Central Point and Med ford. Four main activities a year are planned. Cliff Ayres vi the Medford branch is bank advisor, and Mrs. Helen Oakes and Richard Mil ler from Medford are directors. Other directors are Mrs. Beulah Vessey, Central Point, Mrs. Florence Johnson. Ashland, and Mrs. Charlotte Smiley, Grants Pass. Bob Randall, Grants Pass, is president of the club, John Knox, Ashland, vice - president, Mrs. Alice Hallgren, Medford, trea surer, and Mrs. Betty McKen zie, Central Point, secretary. The four annual activities will be held alternately in the four cities. Burtons Return From Trip East; Niece is Guest Miss Margaret Deines, Mor rowville, Kans., is visiting for about a month at the home of her uncle, C. Ivan Burton, and Mrs. Burton, 26 Richmond ' avenue. She arrived here with the Bur tons on Saturday after the Bur tons had vacationed in Iowa and Kansas. They left here May 17. first going to Portland to visit friends and then east to De trnit. Mich., bv nlane where thev took delivery of a new car They visited relatives and friends in Waterloo, la., and various Kansas towns. They were in the area of recent tor nado storms. In Washington Kans., Mr. Ivan attended a high school class reunion. They returned home by way of Utah and Nevada. Miss Deines was graduated from high school this spring. "Davy Crockett"!
