SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIB"NE Wednesday, . . 1953 Texas Lawmaker Agrees With USC On Shivers Stand Los Angeles' (U.R) Uni versity of Southern California students disclosed last night a member of the Texas House of Representatives has endorsed their stand against the sched uled commencement appearance of Texas Gov. Allan Shivers. The disclosure followed a res olution passed by the Texas House yesterday praising Shiv ers as "a great statesman," and denouncing "radical elements" at the Los Angeles university for opposing Shiver's appearance at the school's commencement exercises Saturday. Against Deiegralion The USC student senate; a ma jority of faculty members and a Baptist Negro ministers group protested Shiver's appearance on grounds he is against recial de segregation. Bill Van Alstyne, SC student body president, said students had received 250 letters from 20 states endorsing their stand against Shivers. "More than 20 organizations have written their support," Van Alstyne said, "and more than half of these are from Texas itself." Name Withheld He said he could not divulge the name of the Texas represen tative who "strongly favored our protest against Shivers " Van Alstyne said SC students would "be happy to hear Gov. Shivers speak on any subject as a regular speaker. "A graduation commencement however, is an extraordinary ev ent where the speaker should inspire young people with ideals and understanding they shall practice all their lives," Van Alstyne said. Committee Reviews Panama Canal Bill Oakland, Calif. (U.R) The Pacific Coast Committee on Panama Canal has called a meet ing to review a canal bill intro duced in the U.S. Senate yester day by Sen. Warren G. Magnu son (D-Wash.), chairman of the Senate Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee. Gen. Robert H. Wylie and Charles P. Howard, co-chairman of the Pacific Coast committee, called the meeting in a letter to committee members in San Diego, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Stockton, Oakland, San Francis co, Portland and Seattle. . The letter said the Senate bill appeared to "effectively deal with certain expense items which have been improperly charged to tolls" on commercial cargoes going through the canal. High School Students Guests of Navy on Ship Portland (U.R) Some 105 Oregon high school students were guests of the Navy today for a trip up the Columbia aboard the heavy cruiser Toledo. The group, consisting of 55 Hi Y graduates from Portland, 10 Junior Hi-Y students from Sa lem and 40 Astoria students, was to board the Toledo at As toria. The trip ends at Portland.
