Texas Lawmaker
Agrees With USC
On Shivers Stand
Los Angeles' (U.R) Uni
versity of Southern California
students disclosed last night a
member of the Texas House of
Representatives has endorsed
their stand against the sched
uled commencement appearance
of Texas Gov. Allan Shivers.
The disclosure followed a res
olution passed by the Texas
House yesterday praising Shiv
ers as "a great statesman," and
denouncing "radical elements"
at the Los Angeles university
for opposing Shiver's appearance
at the school's commencement
exercises Saturday.
Against Deiegralion
The USC student senate; a ma
jority of faculty members and
a Baptist Negro ministers group
protested Shiver's appearance on
grounds he is against recial de
segregation. Bill Van Alstyne, SC student
body president, said students had
received 250 letters from 20
states endorsing their stand
against Shivers.
"More than 20 organizations
have written their support," Van
Alstyne said, "and more than
half of these are from Texas
itself."
Name Withheld
He said he could not divulge
the name of the Texas represen
tative who "strongly favored
our protest against Shivers "
Van Alstyne said SC students
would "be happy to hear Gov.
Shivers speak on any subject
as a regular speaker.
"A graduation commencement
however, is an extraordinary ev
ent where the speaker should
inspire young people with ideals
and understanding they shall
practice all their lives," Van
Alstyne said.
