TWH.VZ MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, June 3. 1953 Big Day Coming Up For Pop . . r Snider Again Wields Potent Bat; Dodgers Smother Braves 13-2 By MILTON RICHMAN Unittd Press Sports Writer Duke Snider figures that he "loused up" his baseball swing ' by playing golf two weeks ago, but if he keeps teeing off on ene my pitchers, he'll put the Dodg ers within a nine iron shot of the pennant in no time For the second straight day, Snider battered par on the Eb betts, field course Tuesday with his 16th homer and a pair of sin gles in a 13- 2rout of the Braves that moved Brooklyn 7V2 games ahead of the straggling National league field. Thursday's performance by the Duke, coupled with the three homers he clouted against Milwaukee Wednesdays, is pret ty fair hitting, especially for a guy who insists, "I haven't real ly felt right at the plate since I went out and played 18 holes of golf while we were out west last month." Going Like Sixty Snider had an 85 on the day he refers to, but he's been going like 60 for the Dodgers, boosting his batting average from .296 to .329 within the space of a week. His two-run homer off Bob Buhl helped the Dodgers to a 3-0 lead in the third inning and then he singled twice in the eighth as the Dodgers poured across 10 runs. Billy" Loes was nicked for homers by pinch hitter td Mathews and Johnny Logan but he had easy sailing for his sixth win. The Phillies defeated the sec ond place Cubs, 8-4. with the help of Andy Seminick's grand slam homer in a five-run first inning. Southpaw Curt Sim mons, who yielded Ernie Banks 13th homer, was the wining pitcher although he had to be rescued by Bob Miller in the seventh. Warren Hacker was the loser. . . Johnny Antonelli of the Giants got back in the winning column with a 6-3 decision over the Redlegs. The Giants pooled five of their nine hits for three runs in the third inning, a frame m which Willie Mays doubled home one run and Sid Gordon doubled in two more. Mays also connected for his 14th homer in the seventh while Don Mueller hit his second homer. Ted Klus zewski collected three of Cin cinnati's six hits, including his 15th four-bagger. Pirates Wallop Cardinals Big Dale Long drove in five runs with a homer and two sin- , i. i i tho Pirates to a IZ-o victory over the Cardinals. In all Pittsburgh blasted five St. Lo'uis pitchers for 17 hits, in cluding a homer by Frank Thomas. Max Surkont was the winner while Harvey Haddix, the ace of the Cardinal mound staff last year, suffered his eighth loss. Rookie Herb Score of Cleve land fanned 10 batters in beat ing Baltimore, 9-3, but the In dians remained three games be hind the American league lead ing Yankees who rolled to their 19th victory in 22 games with a , b Aor Kansas City. lt-D unuuiu " " - Score's 10 strikeouts, all ol which were registered in my first four innings, gave him a i ini o9 envpn more than Bob wiai u ot Turley of the Yankees. Interest Mounts In AAU Scuffle Portland (U.R) Interest in to morrow's Oregon AAU track and field championships here mount ed today as entries continued to, pour in. John Pavelich of Vancouver, B. C, defending discus champion of the meet, said he plans to enter against Fortune Gordien, the world's record holder. . The University of Washington plans to send 11 jnen, including half-milcr Gary Gayton who fin dished second to Oregon's Jim Bailey at Eugene last week in the PCC meet. Bailey has a sore leg muscle and is not expected to compete. The entry list may reach the 425 mark. Ten Medford senior and junior high performers will vie in the AAU track meet Saturday at Portland. Mel Parnell of the Red Sox was beaten, 4-2, by the White Sox in his first appearance of the season. Sidelined with an injured knee since spring train ing, Parnell gave up two runs in the second inning and anoth er in the third before leaving after pitching the sixth. George Kell homered off reliever Tom Hurd. Virgil Trucks registered his fifth victory. Detroit rallied for three runs in the sixth inning with the help of a two run homer by Jackie Phillips to beat .Washington. Paddy Young Fight Choice New York (U.R) Light heavy weight Paddy Young of New York,, who had but three bouts inv 18 months, is favored never theless at 11-5 to tame "Wild cat" Billy McNeece tonight in their TV-radio fight at Madison Square Garden. Many fans regard the 11-5 price . as an "over-lay" because 23-year-old McNeece of Central Islip, N.Y. is such a save slasher some oldtimers call him a "modern Ace Hudkins." Left-hooker Young, 26, is fa vored because of his punch and because of his experience in 61 bouts. Morover, he was good enough two years ago to fight Bobo Olson for the American middleweight title. That was shortly before Olson became world champion. Red-headed McNeece, engag ing in his first Garden main event, has had but 16 profes sional fights. By UNITED STATES Santa Clara.
