For the second straight day,
Snider battered par on the Eb
betts, field course Tuesday with
his 16th homer and a pair of sin
gles in a 13- 2rout of the Braves
that moved Brooklyn 7V2 games
ahead of the straggling National
league field.
Thursday's performance by
the Duke, coupled with the
three homers he clouted against
Milwaukee Wednesdays, is pret
ty fair hitting, especially for a
guy who insists, "I haven't real
ly felt right at the plate since I
went out and played 18 holes of
golf while we were out west last
month."
Going Like Sixty
Snider had an 85 on the day
he refers to, but he's been going
like 60 for the Dodgers, boosting
his batting average from .296 to
.329 within the space of a week.
His two-run homer off Bob Buhl
helped the Dodgers to a 3-0 lead
in the third inning and then he
singled twice in the eighth as
the Dodgers poured across 10
runs. Billy" Loes was nicked for
homers by pinch hitter td
Mathews and Johnny Logan but
he had easy sailing for his sixth
win.
The Phillies defeated the sec
ond place Cubs, 8-4. with the
help of Andy Seminick's grand
slam homer in a five-run first
inning. Southpaw Curt Sim
mons, who yielded Ernie Banks
13th homer, was the wining
pitcher although he had to be
rescued by Bob Miller in the
seventh. Warren Hacker was
the loser. . .
Johnny Antonelli of the Giants
got back in the winning column
with a 6-3 decision over the
Redlegs. The Giants pooled five
of their nine hits for three runs
in the third inning, a frame m
which Willie Mays doubled
home one run and Sid Gordon
doubled in two more. Mays also
connected for his 14th homer in
the seventh while Don Mueller
hit his second homer. Ted Klus
zewski collected three of Cin
cinnati's six hits, including his
15th four-bagger.
Pirates Wallop Cardinals

the PCC meet. Bailey has a sore
leg muscle and is not expected
to compete.
The entry list may reach the
425 mark.
Ten Medford senior and junior
high performers will vie in the
AAU track meet Saturday at
Portland.
Mel Parnell of the Red Sox
was beaten, 4-2, by the White
Sox in his first appearance of
the season. Sidelined with an
injured knee since spring train
ing, Parnell gave up two runs
in the second inning and anoth
er in the third before leaving
after pitching the sixth. George
Kell homered off reliever Tom
Hurd. Virgil Trucks registered
his fifth victory.
Detroit rallied for three runs
in the sixth inning with the help
of a two run homer by Jackie
Phillips to beat .Washington.
Steve Gromek was the winner
although he had to leave the
game because of a back injury

Bobo Olson for the American
middleweight title. That was

NAIA TRACK MEET ENTRY Bruce Friend, Southern Oregon
college, is the District 2 representative in the 440-yard run in the I
NAIA cinder meet at Abilene, Tex., this week end. The Oregon :
Collegiate Conference champion won the quarter-mile in the dis
trict meet last week and is one of four men from the Oregon dis
trict to be flown to Abilene. Friend is a four-year letter winner i
for the Red Raiders. He holds the school record of :50.8 in his
specialty and has been defeated only twice in his college career.
His shoes will be hard to fill next year, Coach Dan Bulkley stated.

best Southern Oregon college

Coach Dan Bulkley in an
award assembly this week listed
the team as tops for the school. ,
Ten school records were shat
tered during the season and in
gaining the OCC title the Raiders
smashed six league marks. .
Clarence Baker ran the 100
and 220-yard dashes in :10 and
:22.4 in the OCC meet for school
and loop marks. Dick Stamm did
the same with :15.5 in the high
hurdles and Chuck Crandall
with 2:05.4 in the half mile.
Friend's school mark in the
440 is :50.8 and his conference
time is :52.'The mile relay team
of Jerry Livingston, Crandall,
Stamm and Friend set their loop
record with 3:35.4.
Other Marks (
Other SOC marks set were
Stamm :25.2 in the low hurdles,
Loren Carter 20 feet 5Vi inches
in the broad jump, Bill Boye
and Joe Morgan 39-9'4 in the
shot put; Boye 121-1 in the discus
and teRdy Springer 175.7V2 in
the javelin.
The Raiders scored 32 Vz points
in placing third in. the NAIA
district test. Top honors went to
Lewis and Clark with 86J2 while
University of ' Portland had
57 56. Those who picked up
points in addition to Friend's
440 win were Springer third in
the javelin. Glen Nelson third
in the vault, fifth in the broad
jump and tie for fifth in the
high jump, Baker third in the
100 and third in the 220, Stamm
fourth in the high hurdles and
fourth ' in the lows, Crandal
fourth in the 880 and relay
team second.
Lettermen this year were
Baker, Boye, Carter, Crandall,
Paul Hartman, Norval Helme,
Terry Martin, Morgan, Stamm,
Art Schmidt and Hal Titus, all
first year; Livingston, second
year; Nelson and Springer, third
year, and Friend, fourth year.
