Thursday, June 2. 1953 Personal Health By WILLIAM BRADY, Readers should address inquiries to: Dr. William Brady 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. A doctor tells me my body does not assimilate the calcium in the tablets I have taken with great satisfaction for two years. He claims it gets into the blood stream more readily when he gives it in "shots." . . . (Mrs. E. B. H.) Ben Told by a doctor that a person past middle age should not take too much calcium, as it is likely to cause kidney stones . . . (A. V. W.) How much is "too much," I wonder? For today's guest column, actor Kirk Douglas writes about his Hollyyood memories. By KIRK DOUBLAS Written for lhe United Press Hollywood (U.R) I see by the calendar that I have been in Hollywood for ten years. Well, that's a nice round number and I don't aim to dispute it. But statistics are cold and a man re members events, not numbers. I remember the day in 1945 that I stepped off the train in Los Angeles Union Station, an actor out of a modestly success ful Broadway play, another young hopeful in town for a screen test. I remember the agency sent a third assistant sub-agent to meet me. He now runs a popular New Klamafh Forest Plans Wilderness Addition Yreka Some 560 acres of wilderness land will be added to Klamath National forest accord ing to present plans. The forest administration plans to obtain the area, in the Marble Mountain Wilderness area, from Raymond H. and Opal M. Taylor, Ashland. Ore., in ex change for some 150 acres of land located elsewhere. The primitive area has arj- proximately 250.000 acres, of which about 2,000 are privately owned. The government has been acquiring the Drivatelv . held lands whenever possible. The primitive area was formed by regulation of the department of agriculture, and is to be kept as nearly as possible in its original state. I was at one time badly crip pled with arthritis (writes Mrs. D. B.). Following your suggest ion I began supplementing my diet with calcium and D three years ago. Now I am 73, seem to be entirely free of joint trou ble, and I'm living an active, normal, happy life. But wait, Doctor, there's no bowling to day. You've got to stay where you are and hear the rest of my sad story. (The lady is right. There's no bowling today. Remembers Roles I remember my elation when "Champion" was a hit and the satisfaction of seeing my name in lights. I remember fine roles in fine movies. Now that I have started my own company, Bryna Produc tions, and supervised the million details that went into the mak ing of my first film, "The Indian Fighter," I think often of those carefree, uncomplicated days when I was only an actor. But my most cherished mem ory, the biggest thrill of my career, took place in 60 minutes one March night in 1950. I had been nominated for an Academy Award for my per formance in "Champion". On my way to the awards, I thought of and discarded a hundred dif ferent acceptance speeches. I settled on one. For Ma I would tell everyone that this was the realization of a dream. My mother, when she lived in Russia, believed that the streets of America were paved with gold. Naturally, I would con tinue, she found that was not true but she also found some thing better than gold in the streets: A chance to raise her children in freedom, a chance for her children to pursue their per sonal dreams. The golden statuette proved, I was going to conclude, that her dream had been a good dream maybe the streets weren't gold en, but the opportunities were. Well sir, it was the best speech I never made, because a wonderful guy named Brokerick Crawford won the award. I con fess I felt cheated but only be cause I had wanted to pay spec ial recognition to my mother, a remarkable woman. That's why I took her name, Bryna, for my new company. I want to be certain, this time, that she receives her reward. WALT'S TV & Radio Service Oldest Shop in So. Oregon 409 E.
