Once while on the witness stand Bernard Baruch, when asked what his occupation was, said, "A speculator." Asked to explain what a "speculator" was, Mr. Baruch said, "A speculator is a man who observes the future and acts befor. it occurs." Ex-Wives About 3,000,000 women are collecting alimony in this coun try. They have to pay income tax on it. Their ex-husbands can de duct the amount from their taxes. vOnly three states provide for the discontinuance of alimony when a woman marries again. In some states no alimony is allowed in the case of a childless wife. Horses & Women Among the places in the world where women, claiming theirs is the superior sex, seem to have proved it is in the Aures Moun tains of Africa. In a group there known as the Shayus, the fe males completely dominate the situation, handling the govern ment, making the laws and so on. Shayu wives rule the house hold. A husband must turn his paychecks over to the Mrs. in tact. The husbands do practically all the housework. Most of the Shayu wives are career women. Their favorite career is that of a dancing girl. It is very diffi cult for a Shayu husband to get a divorce but a wife can have one merely by asking for it. As a result of this, some Shayu fe males have been married as many as 40 times! Asking Q How many times has Leo Durocher been married? A. Three. First to Ruby Bartley, a, Cincinnati girl; second to Mrs. Grace Dozier, a wealthy owner of a St. Louis dress manufactur ing concern, and third to Laraine Day. Q Where in the Bible can be found the saying: "Murder will out?" A It is not in the Bible. It is from Chaucer. Q Who introduced the song titled "Two Little Love Bees," and In what show? A Christie Mac- Donald sang that delightful num ber in the musical hit titled "The Spring Maid." Over There In the British House of Com mons it is against the rules for a member, while addressing the House, to refer to another man as a "liar." That is, the word "liar" is barred. However, it is all right to convey the thought another member has not spoken the truth by the use of some other word or expression. Such as "a trifler with the truth," or "careless with the facts." There are said to be 125 different ways of calling a man a liar without using the word. How many can you think of? Asides The use of snappy descriptive names for provocative perfumes is by no means a new idea. Over a hundred years ago in London there was a popular scent called "Kiss-Me-Quick" . . . Why Franz Schubert didn't finish his "Un finished Symphony" has never been definitely decided. Anyway it is certain it wasn't because he was lazy. In one year Schubert composed five operas, two sym phonies, two Masses and 14 songs. Sidelights When a girl insists upon talk ing excessively when dancing it proves she "ain't got rhythm" ... As to the greatest general in the history of the world, how about the Duke of Wellington? He defeated Napoleon three times. . . Mr. and Mrs. George Goben of Lucas, la., were mar ried 81 years. If that isn't the world record for lengthy mar riages, what is? LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF SALE IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON". MEDFORD (ORKOOl!) MAIL TRIBVKI TUXES Back Stairs: Big Crew at White House By MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Writer Washington U.R) Back stairs at the White House: It takes eight operating engi neers, six carpenters, five elec tricians, and 11 gardeners to keep the White House going. The engineers and the elec tricians have an around-the-clock job tending to the elabor ate lighting and air conditioning system which runs 24 hours a day these hot and humid days. When the White House was re built between 1948 and 1952, a sizeable electrical control room was built far beneath the sur face of the earth and protected by heavy, reinforced concrete walls.' If power facilities all over the city were knocked out, the White House could put independent emergency generating equipment into action. This time of year when it is fairly rainy, the gardeners have a busy time keeping the 18 acres of lawn around the White House well trimmed. The frequent showers and warm sun produce a luxuriant growth in a hurry. In a matter of weeks when hot ter, drier weather sets in, the same gardeners will be busy hauling hoses and sprinklers to combat drought and the now plentiful grass beneath some of the spreading trees will begin to thin out regardless of the tender care. George E. Allen, one of the President's closest friends, lists himself now as counsel to the law firm of Alvord and Alvord of Washington. Seems sort of unusual, a law firm having a counsel for counsel. A White functionary was asked the other day what would happen if all nine buttons in stalled under Mr. Eisenhower's desk were pushed at once. "Four Secret Service men and goodness knows how many White House police, a half dozen secre taries, Mrs. Eisenhower, the doc tor and two butlers would rush into his office at once," he said. "Probably be quite a traffic jam." Few, if any people outside the inner sanctum really know which button signals what. Wonder what Mr. Eisenhower would think today of a West Point cadet who periodically DOGS TOO EXPENSIVE Chicago (U.R) The estate of Mrs. .
