Anderson Named in
Klamath Divorce Suit

James Clinton Anderson, 23, re
cently sentenced . to life im
prisonment for the murder of a
Beatty, Ore., horse raiser, has
been served divorce papers by
his 19-year-old wife, Marcia.
Both' currently are held in Kla
math county jaiX
Mrs. Anderson charged cruel
and inhuman treatment and
claims her husband owes her
$1000. She seeks restoration" of
-her maiden name, Marcia Ches
ter. Anderson said he has not de
cided whether to contest the suit.
Sale of Corvallis
Property Approved
Corvallis (U.R) , The city
of Corvallis and the State High
way commission have announc
ed plans to purchase the site of
the now defunct Corvallis Lum
ber company for 5100,000.
The proposal has been ap
proved by the city council but
still must be authorized by the.
highway commission.
The property comprising about
17 acres, would be used for a
right of way to permit Highway
99W to bypass-the business dis
trict of Corvallis. It extends
along the Willamette river.

STILL TOO MANY TONSIL OPERATIONS
A physician who was formerly
an officer of national associa
tions of societies of ear, nose,
and throat specialists submits
in defense of tonsillectomy:
1. Tonsillotomy (that is. sim
ple "clipping" or slicing off the
obstructing portion of tonsil)
was in common vogue with the
foremost laryngologists at the
turn of the century. Since that
time it has been almost entirely
abandoned by all competent
throat specialists as yielding far
less satisfactory results than ton
sillectomy (that is, radical dis
section of the throat in the en
deavor to remove every bit of
tonsil tissue). Either the opinion
of such doctors has dependable
validity, or Dr. Brady is right.
2. By far the greater number
of tonsil operations are done for
the removal of a source of in
fection, not for mechanical ob
struction. Unless the entire ton
sil is removed, the sources of in
fection would remain unreached
by tonsillotomy.

ian producer apparently won
the biggest
battle of the
century over
"W a r and
Peace."
Although the

old Russia has
been lying
around in pub-

suddenly decided to make a
movie about it.
The Italian producer Dino De
Laurentiis triumphantly invaded
Hollywood to announce he has
won the race and will get his
version to the theater first. He
has signed Henry Fonda, Aud
rey Hepburn, Mel Ferrer and the
Italian army for his supercolos
sal production.
"We already have shot many
battle scenes, and we begin work
with the stars in Rome next
month," Laurentiis said through
his interpreter.
"This probably will be the big
gest movie . ever made. The
script by Irwin Shaw is finished,
the sets are being built and we
will hold the premiere in New
York in a year."
Even the Russians
Producer David O. Selznick,
the Russians themselves and
MGM also had announced plans
to make "War and Peace" but
were left in the dust. De Lau
rentiis' chief rival was Broad
way showman Mike Todd.
"Todd's script, by Robert
Sherwood, won't be finished un
til September, by which time we
will have finished shooting,"
shrugged the Italian producer.
Todd has refused to surrender.
He arrived in Hollywood to hire
a scenic designer for his "War
and Peace" and insists he will
begin shooting in September
with the Yugoslavian army as his
extras.
"A year and a half ago Todd
called us and said he heard we
were doing the picture," De Lau
rentiis said. "He said it might
be a good idea if we saw him be
cause 'I don't think you under
stand the bigness of this thing.'
"But we could see he had not
even read the book! We told Todd
we weren't interested. The next
day Todd announced to the press
he had been working on the pic
ture for years! We were disap
pointed and upset. But we de
cided to fight it out.
"Todd underestimated us. He
tried to bluff us out. But he'll
have trouble getting stars now
that we have started."
De Laurentiis "War and
Peace" will have 60 speaking
parts, including 18 stars, plus
8,000 Italian soldiers and 3,000
horses furnished by the Italian
government.. -
The picture will run four hours
and cost more than $6,000,000.
The producer took over nearly
every movie studio in Rome for
the staggering, project. Entire
sections of Moscow are being re
created, only to go up in smoke
during battle scenes.
De Laurentiis was inspired to
make "War and Peace," he said,
while he was honeymooning in
1949 with luscious actress Sil
vanaTSlanagno. .
"There's no role in the movie
for her but she'll appear in my
next," he promised.

wishes to revert to the pre-anaes-
tnetic days before 1900, it, like
tonsillectomy, demands, in chil
dren, a general anesthetic, and
hence entails an equal, though
fortunately rare, risk of oc
occasional cardiac arrest.
If the laryngologist will con
sent to delete from his first ar
gument the implication that only
incompetent specialists do the
minor operation, we may con
tinue the discussion. This laryn
gologist's "defense of tonsillec
tomy" indicates, doesn't it, that
I'm still in there pitching.
The laryngologists's second ar
gument implies that some tonsil
operations are done for a pur
pose other than the removal of a
source of infection, presumably
to relieve obstruction of the
breathing, obstruction of the
Eustachian tubes (a common
cause of impaired hearing in
childhood) or obstruction of
drainage from a ventilation of
nasal sinuses.
If this be true, why insist on
blind dissection of the throat in
the attempt to "get every bit of
tonsil?" I. say blind dissection,
and I mean just that. If any de
fender of tonsillectomy ques
tions the validity of my remark,
I'll cite authority, provided he
or she is courteous about it.
Tonsillotomy is as nearly in
stantaneous as the extraction of
a tooth, and involves no greater
risk to life than does extraction
of a tooth. Being so quickly over
it requires only brief anesthesia,
if any.
Whether the laryngologist or
other advocates of tonsillectomy
agree that tonsillotomy is a good
alternative for the major opera
tion or not, I beg parents or
guardians of young children now
under the threat of tonsillectomy
to take time to think it over. Re
member, children's tonsils are
usually enlarged in the spring.
Leave 'em alone, any by the time
school opens in the autumn, the
enlarged tonsils will have
shrunken to normal size, es
pecially if the child has spent the
summer playing outdoors in a
minimum of clothing.

Bay, yesterday was appointed
superintendent of Springfield
schools. The appointment was
announced by George Easton,
chairman of the school board
Beall replaces E. H. Silke who
recently resigned to take a sim
ilar position at Troutdale. Beall
was hired for three years at a
salary of $9,500 annually. He
graduated from Linfield college
in 1939 and has been connected
with Coos county schools since
then. He has been in Coos Bay
since 1944.
