LITTLE LESSON The branch of medical science which treats of the nature and cause of disease and the struc tural and functional changes that characterize disease is path ology. The expert who does the au topsy (necropsy) for the coroner is a pathologist, although com monly called medical examiner. Far more important is the ser vice of the pathologist in sur gical diagnosis In a great many instances the physician's opinion of the nature of the trouble is confirmed or negated by the pathologist's examination of ma terial the doctor submits, and perhaps a vital decision for or against radical treatment be comes possible. The most valuable service of the pathologist is in the per formance of the biopsy. Stand ing by, with microscope and other equipment ready, the path ologist quickly examines a bit Founder of Negro College lor Women Passes in Florida Dayton Beach, Fla. (U.R) Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded a callege on a dump heap with $1.50 and became the most prominent Negro woman of her time, died here Wednes day night of a heart attack. Dr. Bethune would have been 80 years old July 10. She had been ill for some time, physicians said, but her mind remained ac tive. She collapsed late Wednesday after spending a full day writ ing at her desk, friends said. Hearing . the news, some 400 students of the Bethune-Cook-man college for Negroes, which she founded, filed out of a pray er meeting singing hymns to pay her homage. Born on Plantation Dr. Bethune was born on a plantation at Mayesville, S.C., one of 17 children. Friends help ed her gain an education but she often worked at menial tasks to complete it. President Franklin D. Roose velt appointed Dr. Bethune as director of Negro affairs for the National Youth Administration and. as his special adviser on minority affairs. She founded the National Council for Negro Women 20 years ago. She was listed in Who's Who. She held honorary degrees from 14 colleges and universities and was honored by several foreign governments. In these days of "wonder drugs" or "miracle medicines" some doctors who use these drugs as cure-alls seem uncon scious of elementary pathology. Otherwise it's hard to see how they can expect the latest mir acle medicine to cure anything. When a physician calls your chronic (a year or more in dura tion) joint disability "arthritis" and prescribes medicine, diet. physical therapy, change of cli-, mate, etc., well, it's just too bad and that's as far as I pur pose to go today. I do wish you'd write and inclose stamped, self addressed envelope for the pamphlet "Calcium and Rheum atiz." Getting right down to ele mentary pathology, joint disab ility of more than a year's standing is usually not arthrit is at all (joint inflammation) if it developed insidiously or gradu ally without one or more attacks of inflammation, characterized by the classical signs, heat, pain, redness and swelling (calor, do lor, rubor et tumor). Much more likely the disabilitv is due to physical degeneration of joint Tissues rheumatiz. Now, then, if there have been no episodes of calor-dolor-nihor- tumor in the development of your joint trouble, it might be 6?
