I had no actual part in the taking of the picture, but I was close enough to the flash to miss a good part of a basketball game in the Iowa field house between Iowa and Wisconsin. A friend of mine, Bob Boyd, now a respectable photographer for the Milwaukee Journal, likes to tell about the first tune he had his fingers burned. Famous Massacre It was on Feb. 14, 1939, St. Valentine's Day. The day of the big shoot down of the George Moran-Dean O'Banion gang in Chicago. ,My old friend, Bob, was going to school at Northwestern and was hanging around the city room in the Chicago Tribune Building. There came a flash over the ticker. There was a bunch of people killed at 2122 North Clark st. Bob Boyd was asked to so along for the ride. He went. The killing of seven was the infamous St. Valentine's Day massacre of one gang by another. Bob was commissioned, for the price of a steak ($1 in those days) to handle the powder gun for a photographer. The first shot filled the small garage on Chicago's near-north side. Bob reloaded. Forgetting his own safety, he cut loose again when the smoke cleared. New Gadgets Bob Boyd and the professional photographers of the time have come a long way since then. Today,- there is no muss or fuss or going off of powder in one's eyes. The inventor of the fotoflash lamp was one Johannes Osterm meier of Germany.. General Elec tric bought the American patent rights for this new gimmick. As of now, a ' cameraman doesn't have to bend his shoul der under a lot of heavy equip ment, although that once was the badge and pride of the pro fession. Congress man Harris Ellsworth has an nounced that competitive exam inations will be held Monday, July 11, for appointments to va cancies at the U.S. Naval acad emy, U.S. Military academy and me u. &. Air force academy. The examinations will be rnn. ducted by the U.S. Civil Serv ice Commission at post office buildings in Albany, Coos Bay, Eugene. Gold Beach. Grants Pass, Medford, . Reedsport and Roseburg. Candidates for the Academies must never have been married and must be bona fide residents of. the fourth congressional dist rict. As of the date of entrance into the cademies, July 1, 1956, appointees must be between 17 and 22 years ot age. Conservatives Gain In British Campaign London U.PJ The Conserva tive party of Prime Minister Anthony Eden is steadily gain ing strength in the campaign race ior victory over Clement Attlee's Laborites in the May 26 general elections, public opinion polls indicate today. Bookmakers betting is legal in Britain are now quoting odds of 7-2 against the Laborites. Last week they offered only 5-2. The latest newspaper polls also showed an increase in Con servative popularity. The polls reported that 49 Vi per cent of voters questioned intend to vote Conservative while 47 per cent favor Labor.
