May 12, 19S5 Disability Provision In Social Security Benefits Described Seriously disabled people for merly covered by the social se curity law should get in touch with the social security office by June 30 and find out about having their earnings record "frozen," W." V. Nusbaum, soc ial security district manager, an- . nounced today. ; Nusbaum believes that many j people in Jackson and Josephine j counties will be helped by thej disability freeze provision in the j 1954 social security amend ments. This part of the law is designed to aid workers who be come totally disabled after hav ing worked for a certain num ber of years in employment or self-employment covered by so cial security. It provides that their social security rights will not decrease during the period of disability. Larger Benefits Possible Many disabled people now getting retirement payments, Nusbaum pointed out, can qual ify under this provision for a larger benefit amount as of July. If the disabled person dies after June 30, the disability can pro tect his family's right to sur vivors payments, but only if he had applied for it before his death. Active military service in World War II and post-war per iods and employment in the rail way industry may count toward . the needed amount of work. Although the law does not provide for the payment of cash social security retirement bene fits before the worker reaches 65, it is nevertheless important that a disabled individual get in touch promptly with the So cial Security administration and establish the fact of his disability- The address of the Medford social security office is 33 North Riverside ave. If a disabled per son is unable to call at the of fice, he may telephone or some one else may call for him, Nus baum said. Medford CAP Unit Getting Prepared For Summer Camp The Medford squadron of the Civil Air patrol is preparing for the annual summer encamp ment at the Portland Air Force base, it was reported today. This year the annual CAP summer encampment will be held June 18-26. An Air Force plane will come to Medford June 18 and pick up all CAP personnel attending the nine day encampment, and will re turn all members on June 28. All cadets planning to attend this year's encampment were .to submit their applications to the commanding officer before May 17, in order to reserve space. All cadets must complete the CAP physical examination re port, have 1955-56 renewal ID cards, have two complete CAP uniforms, one fatigue uniform and must have approximately $15 in cash to help pay for meals and insurance. All cadets at summer camp live on the Air Force base and learn to conduct themselves as the regular Air Force personnel. They attend drills and classes, receive Link trainer time, and are taken on orientation flights in military aircraft. This train ing is of particular value to any cadet who plans on entering any of the armed services .in the future, it was stated. Smoke Poisoning Fatal To Fireman Raymond, Wash. (U.R) Howard A. Norman, a veteran volunteer fireman, died from smoke poisoning yesterday while searching the Rainier apart ments for possible trapped oc cupants after, fire broke out in the building. Fire Chief Charles Oldani suf fered an injured shoulder while directing search of the structure. Norman's body was found in a charred apartment after the blaze apparently started near the chimney. Youth Legislature Will Open Friday Salem (U.R) - The eighth annual Oregon Youth Legisla ture opens here tomorrow with one thing certain. It will be shorter than the 115-day session recently adjourned by the reg ular legislature.' The youthful lawmakers wind up their bus iness Saturday. Gov.
