TEH MEDFORD (OREaON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday' May 11, 1953 Shady Cove -Trail News Shady Cove-Trail With the coming of spring a great deal of activity has seemed to spring up around Shady Cove and vicinity with new buildings going up and new interest being shown in real estate in the area. The business lot between the Rainbow Cafe and the Roguedale Cash Market has been purchased by O. L. Williams of Shady Cove from R. D. Abel of Medford. Mr. Wil liams plans to hold this, lot for investment purposes. Shady Cove will have the services of Dr. Howard Ferguson, formerly of Glendale, who is an osteo pathic physician -surgeon, as soon as the doctors' building is completed. Ted Conway of Shady Cove has the contract for erection of the building which will be quite large and will have an X-ray room, operating room, two examining rooms, office, laboratory and reception room, also a carport and entryway for ambulance on the side. Work ing for Conway on the building are Ed Houston, Slim Leiders and Carroll Watson of Shady Cove, Frank Allen of Glendale and J. G. Frampton of Trail. There is a possibility that later In the year other buildings may be built next to the doctors' building to take care of the needs- of a druggist and dentist. Dr. Ferguson has rented the half of the duplex from Mrs. Pearl Adair of Shady Cove, n Walking down to the Rogue- dale Cash Market yesterday the correspondent noted that new screen doors were being put up at the store by Art Levulett, Jack Reed, a resident of Shady Cove for the past three years, but formerly from Texas, has purchased a 7-acre lot across from the Jesse Lowerys at the corner of the River road and Longbranch road from ' Walter Mallory and is building a small house with garage on part of the lot. His friends, Mr. and Mrs Harold Jones and family of Cen tral Point, plan to build a house on the other part of the lot. Nellie Chamberlain of Shady Cove has returned home from the Community hospital where she has been confined as the re sult of an injury to her kneecap suffered in a fall at her home. She Is convalescing nicely and can have visitors. She wishes to thank all those who were so kind as to send cards and flow ers and visit her at the hospital during her stay there. Mr. and Mrs. Athel Dudley of Shady Cove attended the state Dry Cleaners convention in Eu gene the past week end. They had a very enjoyable time while there and learned a good many new ideas pertaining to the dry cleaning business. Tom Dooley of Talent has been visiting his niece and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. John Collins of Shady Cove. Mrs. Collins' mother, Mrs. Ida Troop, has re turned to . Shady Cove after pending the winter in . Palm Springs, Calif. There will be a chapel benefit card party sponsored; by Our Lady of Fatima club on Friday. May 13, starting at 8 p.m., at the Shady Cove school gym. Bridge, pinochle and canasta will be played with prizes being given for high and low scores in each game. Refreshments will be served and a prize awarded. Child care and enter tainment will be provided for the children of parents attend ing the card party. All members of Our Lady of Fatima club and ladies of the parish are asked to make either a white. or dark cake with icing for the party. On Sunday, May 15, following mass, the ceremonies of the blessing of the land for the new chapel and groundbreaking will be held. Actual work on the build ing is to start the following Sunday. The Rev. and MrsfR. J. Ban ning and granddaughter of Van Nuys, Calif., were recent over night guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sheppard and family of Shady Cove. .Visiting the Shep- ipards at present is Mr. .Shep-:.,..j,- u-u a t m. and Mrs. Norval. Sheppard and children of Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Helges son of Portland were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Watson of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Davis and son, Hank, flew to Sacra mento, Calif., over the past week end to spend Mothers' day with Jimmy's mother, Mrs. Clara Davis. " Mr. and Mrs. Roy Long of Long's Valley supply, Shady Cove, drove as . far as Drain May 6, where they met their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Rhey Rhodes and children, who had driven down from Port land and then picked up their other daughter and granddaugh ter, Mrs. Dave ' Preuss and Sherry in Grants Pass and went on a picnic on the coast. Richard Smallwood of Ft. Ord, Calif., is spending his 2-week furlough visiting his uncle and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Smallwood, of Shady Cove, be fore reporting for duty in Mis souri with the 8th Engr. bat talion. Mrs. Dolf Larson of Shady Cove entertained at her home with a birthday party honoring her daughter, Eda's 12th birth day. Games were played and refreshments served. Highlight of the party was a treasure hunt on the grounds. Guests present were Jackie and Jo Hume of Trail, and Pam Vanderlip, Mary Leekey, Sharon Bowdoin, Letha Zirby, Kathleen. Houston, . Bill Pfeifer, Gary Stelle and Ralph Goode of Shady Cove. The 5th, 6th and 7th grade girls belonging to the Girl Scout troop at Shady Cove school en tertained their mothers at a tea at ; the schoolhouse on May 6. Mothers attending were Mes dames Jim Vanderlip, Marion Walters, Clayton Knotts, Wilbur Blackman, Orage Houston, Wil liam Leekey, Donald Harmon, George Martin and Dolf Larson, and Leader Mrs. David Rastall, district leader, Mrs. Ivan Hale, and Mrs. Ed Learning, represent ing Steelhead Auxiliary V.F.W Post No. 6881. i Dan Krotz III and his baby son, Danny IV, moved over the week end from his parents' home in Shady Cove to Ashland where he will be nearer his work. Mrs. Bob Alworth of Medford, former resident of Trail, has just received! word of the death of her brother, Sam Netherland, who died Saturday . in Walla Walla, Wash. . Chet Pfluke of Oakland spent the Mothers' day week end vis iting the Ernie Segessenman family of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shere of Big Butte creek, Trail, have sold their home on Big Butte creek to Mr. and Mrs. Edwards of Los Angeles who plan to use the place mostly as a summer vaca tion residence. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shere are grandparents of a baby girl born to their daughter, Mrs. Dave Winans (the former Barbara Shere) in Medford" at Sacred Heart hospital. The "baby, who has , been '-. named Marguerite, weighed 7V pounds at birth. Sisters from St. Mary's school in Medford will conduct a two- week religious catechism school at the Shady .Cove school gym starting June 6. A number of local Shady Cove and Trail ladies were seen attending the Homemakers' fes tival in Central. Point. Both.the Rogue Elk and Shady Cove Ex tension units were well . repre sented. A very, clever skit was put on by the Rogue Elk unit concerning "Weight and Vita mins' which gave the audience a good laugh. Shady Cove Ex tension unit had a table display of the "home medicine cabinet" and various articles of ham mered copper made by members of the unit. Wearing of Shorts Latest Thing for Texas Milkmen Dallas, Tex. U.R) That ultra-fashionable man who saunter ed up to certain Dallas doors today was the milkman- clad in Bermuda walking shorts. Thirty of 120 milkmen employed by one Dallas dairy so made their rounds.. With their shorts a sedate black they wore short sleeved khaki shirts, knee-length ribbed shirt, knee-length ribbed khaki socks, black loafers and black golfers' caps. This ensemble, furthermore, represents the official although not the obligatory wear for Metzger Dairies milkmen from today until mid-September, when summer is only just beginning to wane in Dallas. Dairies owner Jake Metzger, with no advance warning, Tues day sent out two of his milkmen dressed in shorts for a test re action. . It was, he reported, good. . , "One housewife said her husband will bless us because he's been trying for years to get up the courage to put on Bermuda shorts. Now we've given him a reason for doing it," Metzger said. The dairy owner frankly hopes to start a trendj to encourage all sorts of men to begin wearing shorts to work. As for his milkmen, he is resigned to the fact they probably will have to take a lot of kidding. He doesn't figure that will hurt business.
