Evge ni I. Porfiriev and a large dele gation fit Soviet newsmen, news reel and still photographers and the Western press. Taken in Motorcade : They were whisked into the city in a motorcade to the Na tional Hotel overlooking Red Square for the late starting ban quet and a sample of lavish Rus sian hospitality. There was little conversation but broad smiles and cries of -'What say, sarge!" to a grinning Soviet ex-sergeant. Profiriev toasted in vodka, Statehood Measures Come Before House Washington U.R) The House gets another crack this week at legislation which would give statehood to Hawaii and Alaska. All sides Saturday fore cast a close vote. - Some congressional sources said privately the outcome prob ably is not too important. They said the bill has little chance of becoming law anyway. Statehood advocates are not buying this argument. They are out to push the bill through the House, and are willing to worry later about what comes next. In the past, their hopes have been smashed repeatedly after false starts in one house or the other, in behalf of one territory or the other, or both. In their most recent effort, last year, the House approved statehood for Hawaii; the Sen ate added Alaska. When the bill came back to the House for con currence, it died in the rules committee. - hoping the Americans would "have a fine time in Moscow" although their stay was short and suggested they prolong their visit beyond the scheduled five days. The nine Americans were Mur ray Schulman of New York City, William Weisel of Cincinnati, Robert Haag of Indianapolis, Jo seph Polowsky of Chicago, Charles C. Forrester of Greer, S.C.; Fred Johnston of Bradford, Pa., Claude Moore of Newbern, Tenn.; Elijah Sams Jr., of Pin nacle, N.C., and Byrol L. Shiver of Lakeland, Fla. J33fieAY 6opcr "s-rw po JW airport he hoped to met the boys they met ten years ago and said "We will try to do all in our power to be good friends. : Plans for the meeting between the men who actually shook hands with one another when the Russian and American armies met at the Elbe in 1945 were still uncertain. But Polowsky told the group it was "in the works" and may come off Tuesday or the next day. Col. Porfiriev said the Ameri cans would be shown the Mos cow subway and the other ob jects on the standard tour for visitors possibly the Kremlin, Moscow University, the Stalin Auto Works, the Bolshoi Thea ter, ballet and opera. Eugene Hotel Checked After Threat of Bomb Eugene 0J.R) The Eugene hotel, largest in the city, re ceived a bomb threat from an anonymous caller Saturday night who said he had planted a bomb to go off on the fifth floor at any time. ' A squad of policemen check ed the building, but failed to uncover any bomb. Hotel occupants evacuated the fifth floor while the search was conducted. Police believed the call to be the work of a crank or prank ster and no threat of extorition was made. ggpg Mobilgas Lnk for this sign FORD LnJMEK2S New gas stops knocks saves, too! Japanese Film Star Eii Route for Kiss - i San Francisco '(U.R) Mistuko Kimura, 22 year old Japanese film star, arrived here yesterday from Tokyo, en route to Holly wood to finish a motion picture with a kiss. Miss Kimura, who was select ed for the lead role in the pic ture "Sergeant O'Reilly" refused to kiss her leading man, Aldo Ray, and complete the picture while Columbia studios was on location in Japan. The dainty Japanese beauty explained that kissing is con trary to Japanese tradition and would be offensive to her coun trymen. She was flown to the United States to complete the final scene of the picture in Hollywood. She will end it with a kiss to please Western audiences.
