Or at her boudoir table? If not she should. Women who sing stay younger looking longer than other females. According to a Weather Bureau official hurricanes are given women's names because they, like women, are unpredict able. Q. I claim Nellie Melba was the first to sing the role of Mimi in "La Boheme" in this country. Right? A. Wrong, sir. You lose the carefully wrapped stogie. "La Boheme" had its Oct. 14, 1897, at the Los Angeles Theatre, Los Angeles, Calif. Linda Montanari sang the role of Mimi. However, Melba was the first to sing Mimi at the Met ropolitan Opera House. "The husbands of Aries women are terribly hen-pecked, the poor fellows. Did you hear about the Aries woman who slapped her little boy for impertinence and then said to a friend who was present, "I won't have that boy answering me back. It sets a bad example for his father." His and Hers As I recently said, there are by law in Sweden "his" and "hers" alcoholic drinks served at bars. The "his" portion is much larger than the "hers." Now in some markets in the Middle West in this country "his" and "hers" steaks are being retailed. They are in the same packages. One labeled "his," the other "hers." The "his" is a much larger steak than the "hers." Passing By Many changes of names made by people are based on numero logy. They believe the change will improve their luck. For ex ample, a California numerolo gist named Miswald Wrandova kist thought his name' was un lucky so he had it changed to Lincoln Disgrowles Wrandvan fgrimotkets. Getting Up The fighter I saw get up from the floor most after being knock ed down was Luis Angel Firpo in his hectic bout with Jack Dempsey. Luis arose from the floor seven times. That, , how ever, was far from the record. In a bout between Joe Jeanette and Sam McVey in Paris in 1907, Jeanette was knocked down twenty-seven times . and got up each time. Not. only that, he won the fight. In the twenty ninth round McVey threw in the towel. "I gives up," said Mc Vey, "that there Jeanette ain't really human. He's made of rubber." INCOME REPORTED Portland (U.R) Portland Transit Company and its sub sidiary, Portland Traction, today reported a net income of $114. 352 for the first quarter of 1955, compared to a deficit of $7955 during the same period last year. As We Live By ELIZABETH HU1LOCK, PH.D. Teenage Daughters Ashamed Of Home ' Teenagers are very self-conscious about the appearance of their home. There is no reason for. parents to permit the situa tion to get to the point where their children are ashamed to have their friends come to their home." "- (Q) "We have - three chil dren, 16, 18, and 19 years old. The two older ones are work ing, while the younger one is still in school. They all live at home. Our home is old and in need of r e p a irs. The children are ashamed . to bring their Dr. Herlock Friday. May 8, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THRES friends to our home because they say their friends all have better homes. When I speak to my husband about fixing anything, he always says, 'You fix it.' I think that is a man's work, and besides, I haven't the money to fix things if I tried. He makes a good salary but he won't give me any money for the house and I never have anything left after buying food and a few clothes for myself. What would you suggest that I do? I don't want my - daughters meeting the boys on the street or at dance halls, but it isn't fair to keep them from having dates either." (A) "It certainly is not fair: to put- your, daughters . in such a position that -4hey are em barrassed to bring their friends home. Nor is it fair to them to give the boys the bad impression about them they are certain to get when they meet them on the streets or in, public dance halls. Today there 'are such quick and easy ways to spruce up a house and furniture that even a complete amateur can do a good job. Just read the directions given and you will have no trouble. As for the cost of materials, could you not ask your children who are working to contribute part of it? Then', if your husband refuses to give you the money you need, try giving him cheap food and save something frorn the food allowance. This may convince him that you are ser ious about wanting your home to be such that your children won't be ashamed of it. (Copyright 1955, General Features Corp.)
