TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, May S, I95S Scouts Hold Luncheon in Grants Pass About 125 valley women at tended the annual spring Girl Scout council business meeting and luncheon held at the Grants Pass Elks club Tuesday. The Ashland-Talent district was awarded a Girl Scout "Oscar" for the highest attendance based on the percentage of registered adult membership present, hav ing almost 50 per cent of their members present. " Grants Pass was a close sec ond, with about 47 per cent present. The statuette is to be an annual award and will be kept by the winning district for the year. 0 High point of the meeting was presentation to Mrs. Michele Rossi, area president, of the keys to a new 1955 Chevrolet station wagon by Ted Kelt of Kelt Chev rolet in Grants Pass. The new car replaces the Chevrolet ranch wagon given by Mr. and Mrs. Kelt in 1952. . During the morning business meeting the proposed budget was presented by Kenneth Wu ner, member of the finance com mittee, and was accepted for the year 1955-1956. It was announced that Girl Scouts wishing to attend the 33rd annual meeting of the Na tional Council of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. November 1 to 4 in San Francisco are to apply in writing to a committee headed by Mrs. Charles Barnes, first a vice-president. She is assisted by Mrs. Hugh Moulton and Mrs. El liott Duffy. Two girls are en titled to attend, and five adult delegates, one from each district, and one representing the area council board. ' . Mrs. Rossi announced that five women representing this area, would be entitled to attend the evening meeting and program to be held in Portland on Thursday, May 5, in honor of Mrs. Roy Lay ton, national president of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Folders for the established camp and also registration cards were distributed to the leaders for the girls in their troops. The folders were printed by courtesy of the J. C. Penney company, Medford, and the Golden Rule company. Grants Pass, official equipment agencies in the Rogue Valley area. The afternoon's program was In charge of Mrs. Ben Newman, second vice-president. Colors were presented by .Mrs. Lewis Larson. Mrs. Louis Grimmer, Mrs. F. E. Reed, and Mrs. Al Lent. During the luncheon, Mrs. Bernice Ullian's Troop 54 of Mariner Scouts , was introduced. Eight of the 10 girls, who have been together under Mrs. Ul lian's leadership since the sec ond grade were present, wear ing their blue and white mar . meres' uniforms. Dianne Dayton described the itinerary for the troops "Across the Border" en campment in British Columbia. Mrs. Ullian's troop is one of three troops from the Northwest to be chosen to attend the en campment with the Canadian Girl Guides. A style show of Girl Scout apparel and equipment was pre sented by courtesy of Mrs. C. E. Trumbley of the Girl Scout euipment service in the Golden Rule store, and Mrs. L. G. Stid ham. Clothing was modeled by both Girl Scouts and Brownies. A certificate of recognition was presented to Kenneth Wu- ner, president of the Grants Pass Lions club, in appreciation of the club's fund-raising efforts for the Grants Pass Girl Scouts. Mrs. J. H. Helm, area Juliette Low chairman, announced a bal ance of $114.50 in the Juliette Fund. ; The hospitality committee for the meeting were Mrs. Hugh Moulton, chairman, Mrs. Lyle Hayden, and Mrs. E. K. Miller. Elizabeth Signals Start of Campaign London (U.R) Queen Eliza beth II disbanded Parliament and signaled the start of the campaign for the May 26 elec tion today in a speech express ing hope for "fruitful negotia tions with the Soviet Union." - The queen's speech was read for her by officials in the House of Lords and then in the House of Commons. The queen also framed a royal proclamation to be issued later - in the day formally dissolving Parliament. The dissolution of Parliament marks the beginning of the all out political campaign which will culminate in the voting for a new Parliament in general ""elections May 26. . By unwritten law door-to-door canvassing and other essential parts of the campaign do not start until Parliament is dissolved. Arch F." Turpin, the men of Roxy Ann court formed the honor guard for the coronation ceremonies. , - Concert Tonight In Eagle Point Eagle Point Eagle Point school will the put on their an nual spring concert tonight at 8 o'clock at the school gymna sium. The program is to be pre sented by the music department under the direction of Steve Whipple. In addition to band and chor us numbers, solo and trio num bers are also on the program. Admission is free and the pub lic is invited to attend. 7 9-Y ear-Old Pendleton Girl Roundup Queen Pendelton .(U.R) Kathryn Wyss of Pendleton, 19-year-old rodeo cow-riding champion, will reign as queen of the annual Pendleton Roundup in Septem ber. The five foot four inch bru nette, who won the cow-riding belt competing against boys her own age at the John Day Rodeo last year, works in Pendleton as secretary for a. local lumber company. The roundup will be held Sept. 15-17. Of the 3,700 Red Cross chap ters in the United States one of three is staffed wholly by vol unteers. I x.Ail I Dr. Floyd L. Council of Blind To Hold Election - Election of officers will be held at a meeting of Jackson County chapter, - Oregon Asso ciated Council of the Blind, planned for Sunday, May 8, at 2 p.m. in St. Mark's Guild hall, corner of , Fifth and Oakdale avenue. This will be the first anni versary of organization of the chapter. Plans will be completed for the street sale of suvenir white canes to be held May 17 and 18. Funds derived from the sale will be used to carry on the work of the chapter. During the social hour, mothers will be honored. SOC Production Continues Tonight Ashland "The Man Who Came to Dinner," Kaufman and Hart comedy, opened last night at Southern Oregon college with a smooth performance by " the student cast. The play continues tonight and Saturday, with cur tain time both nights at 8 p.m. Stafford Thomas, Australian student, who plays the role of Sheridan Whiteside, the man who came to dinner, was enthus iastically applauded by the open ing night audience .The young actor has appeared in a number of college productions and has been highly praised for his work in all roles. Maggie Cutler, a freshman from Roseburg, plays the femi nine lead and was also well re ceived by the audience. Miss Dorothy Stolp directs the production. The conference, one of a series which will lead up to the White House conference on education called by President Eisenhower for late in 1955, has the support of many county civic leaders. Monday's meeting here will open at 5:45 p.m. with a meeting of discussion group leaders in Room 44 of Medford Senior High school. A banquet is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. in the same build ing, and at 8 p.m. the group will be divided into six units to dis cuss the six phases of education which are to be considered.' Group I will discuss "What should our schools accomplish." Chairman will be Mrs. Arthur Kreisman, Ashland, consultants will be Frank Van Dyke, Med ford, and Dr. Jack McAuley, Ash land, and recorder will be. Mrs. Moore Hamilton, Medford. Group II will have the topic "How can we get the school fa cilities we need" and Dr. Christ ian Hald, Ashland, will be chair man. Robert Boyer, Medford, and Alf Mekvold, Central Point, GRANGE Live Oak Grange Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Seiger, former residents of Rogue River, now living in California, were welcomed back to Live Oak Grange, when they attended the last meeting.' Also present were Mrs. Forrest Bradfield after a vacation in California, and Mr. and Mrs. Claud Morgan who had been visiting their children in Portland. Members of the Agricultural committee reported the poultry market about the same, with prices of pouutry and eggs show ing little change, small variation on the hog and cattle market and very little activity in the sale of ewes and lambs. Cassie Golding was elected delegate to the State Grange in surance session and also alter nate. Mrs. Roy Cameron gave an interesting report on the Pomona Grange meeting held in Phoenix. Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Streitz and Mr. and Mrs. John Leyen serv ed the refreshments. will be consultants and Dr. Wil liam Thompson, Medford, re corder. "How can we get enough good teachers and keep them" will be the topic for Group III, and Al vin Fellers, Ashland, will be chairman. Mrs. Mabel Winston, Ashland, and Mrs. Harold Thomas will be consultants and Lawrence L. Clark,. Medford, will be recorder. - "How can we organize our school systems most efficiently and economically" will be dis cussed by Group IV. Chairman will be Edward Branchf ield, Medford, Henry Padgham and Leonard Mayfield, both Med ford, will be consultants, and Fred M. Bruegger, Eagle Point, will serve as recorder. "How can we pay for our schools" v will be the topic of Group V, with Walter Bedford, Ashland, as chaiman. "How can we obtain continu ing public support of education" under the chairmanship of Mrs, will be discussed by Group VI Jim Busch, Ashland.
