The Laborites .suffered a net loss of 13 seats in a slight swing to the right in voting in , 98 Scottish cities and boroughs. Less than 40 per cent of the electorate turned out in most districts and the vote did little to affect the status of the par ties in the various city and county councils. It happened long, long ago, but I still feel red in the face when I think of it. I had just hung my shingle on the door way leading to my office over Tower's clothing store on the four corners in Penn Yan last time I saw Penn Yan the store was run by a handsome fellow named Boyd -who .was Walter Tower's errand boy in the golden days when Topsy was a colt. Some nice people were kind enough to invite the new doc tor to their home for a card party euchre, what else? Ev erybody was so intent on the game and the crowded room was so quiet I was under no strain at all. Suddenly a ponderous gentleman, leaning back in his chair to study his hand leaned a bit too far and fell on the floor. Everybody else gasped, but the new doctor oh well, I guffawed. The man suffered nothing more than loss of dig nity, but few if any of the guests at that party ever en gaged my professional service. I don't guffaw but I do get many a quiet chuckle from the ponderous "literature" ground out these days on the, subject of "arthritis," chronic joint trouble, that is. The credulity, yes, the gullibility of customers with such trouble is marvelous, and whenever the customers be gin to lose interest a brand new miracle medicine arrives. The new medicine, according to Uncle Pete or Aunt Polly, prom ises to conquer the scourge that has so long baffled, etc. Now you poor souls know I'm no authority on joint trouble or any other ailment. But since I took to quacking it in the pa pers I have had more time to study what I call chronic rheu matiz more than most real doctors have, I mean. And the conclusion I have drawn from this study, which may or may not interest you, is that in most cases chronic joint disability (trouble of over a year's dura tion) is not inflammation at all, nor arthr-itis, but physical de generation. If this offends you, I'm? sor ry not that I said it, but that anybody who can read can be so . . . ' Never mind. Consult Webster for the medical meaning of de generation. . I am sure any nutrition auth- Suspects Arrested In Beating Death Portland (U.R) Two blood- spattered men were jailed yester day as suspects in the slaying of John Hall Goodwin, 47, who was stomped to death in his room here several hours earlier, police reported. Held by police were Leo Brown, 34, and Joseph Hill, 31. Shoes worn by both Brown and Hill were covered with blood, according to police. Hill had attempted to cover the stains with polish. Four material witnesses held in connection with the slaying said Hill and Brown had been in the hallway outside the dead man's room in a Portland hotel. The witnesses were Alice C Olsen, 38, James Evans, 65, Ma ria Roa, 34, and Lester Barrett, 56. Goodwin's body was discover ed by the Olsen woman about 4 a.m. It was lying face down on the floor. The chest had been kicked in smd the head was covered with wounds. So it seems to me that the fast-buck operators who exploit popular credulity with ever changing wonder drugs and funny treatments for "arthritis" are just exploiting popular cred ulity. How many friends or acquain tances of yours have been cured of their "arthritis?" Let there be no misunder standing about this. I know of no cure for chronic rheumatiz. But hundreds of reports very well, then, testimonials - re ceived from readers I believe the suggestions I offer do not harm in any case and do much good in many cases. Allen Davis Jr., who was 30 months old. Doctors at Foundation hospit al said the boy was given a shot of the vaccine 11 days ago. He developed bulbar polio Sunday. It said it has approved 10, 500,000 does for distribution so far. This compares with an ear lier government estimate that more than 17,000,000 doses would be available at this time. The Health Service said one factor in the "net slowdown" in the availability of vaccine is the ban on vaccine produced by Cutter Laboratories, Berkeley, Calif. It had been assumed 1, 720,000 Cutter shots would have been produced by now.
