May 4, 1953 G)ncert Program Numbers Announced; George Peckham Arrives from Seattle Program numbers for the con cert which will b given by the Philharmonic Society of South ern Oregon Thursday, May 5, at Medlord Senior High school auditorium, have been announc ed by Richard D. Werner, direc tor. The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. Opening the program will be two orchestral numbers, "Cia conna" by Jomelli and Mozart's "Symphony in D Major." George Peckham, basso from Seattle, Wash., will be soloist for the concert and his first two numbers will be arias, with or chestral accompaniment. First will be an aria from 'Simon Boccanegra" by Verdi, and the second will be from "Don Gio vanni," Mozart. Intermission will follow. American composer, Cecil Bur leigh, Tschaikowsky's "Andante Cantabile, Opus 11," and a com position of the director, Mr. Werner, entitled 'Suite An- cienne." This will be followed by a group of four numbers sung by Mr. Peckham, with Bruno Pel legrini of Medford as accompan ist. They are to be "Dedication" and "Belshazzar" by Schumann, "I Am a Roamer Bold," by Men delssohn and "The Untamable" by Brahms. The program will close with the 'Village Music," a suite by another American composer, Douglas Moore. Mr. Peckham arrived in Med ford Monday and will rehearse with the orchestra and Mr. Pel legrini a number of times before the performance Thursday night. He is a guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Peckham Sr., of 219 Beatty street in this city. The soloist will be remember ed by hundreds of friends in the valley, for he spent his boyhood days here and took his first voice lessons here with the late Jim Stevens. The singer began his career as a "singing waiter" in Portland and Seattle and then turning to radio, became the featured soloist of a popular northwest program known as Captain Dobbsie's "Ship of Joy." - Mr. Peckham has had wide ex perience in opera and oratorio, and during a recent season with the famous Robert Shaw choral group. He Is now singing with the Metropolitan Four, a group which he organized and which makes many appearances in Washington. In 1951-52 Mr. Peckham was chosen by the composer, Lock rem Johnson, to create the role of Mr. Dickenson in the chamb er opera, "A Letter to Emily." The opera had its world premier under the direction of Emanuel Rosenthal widely known French composer. Later the opera tour ed the Pacific northwest and Canada. Correct Names Listed For Garden Club Show Mrs. C. C. Sater had charge of the herb exhibit and Mrs. J. D. Hoist the bird exhibit for the recent spring flower show of Medford Garden club. These names were incorrectly listed in a recent account of the show. The herb exhibit included the common plants or herbs which are poisonous, and also medicinal herbs. One thing of interest was a belt made of lav ender; it Is the custom of the women of the Lette family of Tasmania, Australia, to wear these under their formal gowns. It is set for Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m. in First Presbyter ian church. Mrs. J. Claude Sparks is pres ident of the council, and Mrs. J. R. Sides is program chairman for the event. The meeting is set for 2:30 p.m.in Phoenix High school gymnasium. A style show will be held, with high school students model ing, and refreshments will be served in the home economics room after the meeting. Child care will be provided. Those attending are ask ed to take flowers that have i j:: j j sa(.r Red Cross Opens Home Nursing Training Class Jackson county chapter, Amer ican Red Cross, announced today that a series of training classes in home nursing is being held in the recreation room at Gilman's dairy on Merriman road. The classes are being conduct ed by Mrs.. Patricia Hunsaker, nursing representative from the area office in San Francisco. The training sessions started Monday and are for the purpose of train in instructors who will teach other classes. They will be con tinued for two more weeks. The training courses are open to the public at no cost and any one interested may register at the Red Cross office, telephone 2-4405. Arch F. Coleman, a graduate of the University of Minnesota after spending two years at West Point, had his foreign exper iences via the private business route, working as a clerk with the United Fruit company in Guatemala. Later he worked for an oil company and sold heavy machinery in . Mexico; he then was employed by the United States government as an assist ant trade commissioner in Mex ico City. With this foreign service as, a background, he was again sent to Mexico to spy out the extent of the Gestapo and Japanese in telligence service. A. Eden, no later than Saturday, May 7. School Stages New Observance Of Music Week Students of Jackson School participated yesterday in a new kind of Music week observance. Mrs. Delia Weber, music teach er at .Jackson, was in charge. All students from grade one through grade six were seated around the school gymnasium where they could hear and see performances by the Jackson School chorus, band and orch estra. Each grade sang several songs and as a climax to the all-school program, Mrs. Weber directed the student body, in three familiar favorites, 'Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Ballad of Davy Crocket," and "Ameri ca." Roberta Willett, sixth grader, presented a short talk on the interest shown in musical activ ities during this week through out the world.
