The fans who watch MGM's first science fact ual film, "For bidden Planet," won't Alia Mosby see Frankie's face on the screen, hear his voice or read his name in the credits. Frankie told why today, and it's an ironic story from the land of ups and downs, of fame and glory one day and memories the next. In hundreds 01 monogram pictures ne was a jockey or a true-blue hero who caught the criminals to please his smiling Irish mother at home. His biggest hit was "Wild Boys of the Road." After five years in the Navy, Frankie tried to resume his act ing career. But, as he explained today, "Things were kinda slow." He tended bar. Later he was a part-owner of another bistro. For a while he ran a children's play-ground and helped the kids ride ponies. Then Monogram released 100 of his antique movies to tele vision. Frankie Darro became a star again. "People started remembering my name," he said. "I started back to work with one-day jobs, then three-day jobs." He won roles on such TV programs as "Public Defender' and "So This Is Hollywood." He portrayed a little old 'lady on the Jack Benny and Red Skel ton shows. Then came his big chance, a part in an MGM movie, "Forbidden Planet," in color and Cinemascope. When Frankie showed up at the studio, he found himself hid den inside a robot uniform. Trick Voice , ?He wears an uncomfortable, 84-pound, -6-foot-l 0-inch costume to portray a genius robot in the year 2200. His own body not only isn't seen but a mechanical trick voice will be dubbed in for the robot's conversation. "But I don't mind," Frankie said cheerfully. "This is a lot of fun. Besides, I've seen a million people I used to know on the MGM lot. It might lead to regu lar acting roles." Frankie's robot character may steal the movie. The robot can make anything you wish, in cluding jewel-studded gowns for the heroine, Anne Francis. The robot also is a super garbage disposal and handy man. If audiences could see Frankie, they would notice he hasn't changed much. His hair is gray ing but his face still is young and his body wiry. "If they could hear my voice they'd know me," he grinned. "After the Benny show some body stopped me on the street and said they knew me despite the eld lady disguise." Crewmen Taken From Raft Lelii By Coast Guard Monterey. Calif. (U.R) A Coast Guard cutter plucked the five man crew of the raft Lehi from their floundering craft in pre-dawn darkness early today. "All Dassensers rescued from raft Lehi II, including Skipper Baker" the rescue craft "Active" reported by radio. The rescue occurred 44 miles off the California coast when one of the crewmen was re ported "so weak from hunger he could hardly move." None of the raft's occupants had eaten since they set out from San Francisco Friday with plans to drift across 2500 miles of open sea to the Hawaiian islands. When they were pulled aboard the Coast Guard rescue vessel they were wet, cold, hungry and weak. Raft Left to Flounder ' The raft was left to flounder in the heavy swells of the Pac ific ocean. The Coast Guard rescue ship reached the battered raft early today. It reported on arrival at the scene that a raft would have to be launched to save Devere Baker, the 39-year-old captain of the Lehi, and his four crewmen. The Active sped to the scene in answer to a distress call from the raft Sunday night. A Coast Guard patrol vessel and a search plane also went to the Lehi's aid. Once the mien were aboard, the Active was expected to bring them to Monterey. The five-sided Lehi II began breaking up Sunday in a severe storms "the worst I've ever been in," according to Baker. The raft had set out from San Francisco Friday in an attempt to drift to Hawaii across 2500 miles of ocean. The crew was to subistson fish and distilled sea water. By UNITED PRESS A freak May snow storm ma rooned fishermen in the South ern California mountains today and dumped more than a foot of snow on Central Nevada. The strange spring outburst washed out a scheduled atomic blast on the desert near Las Vegas. Meanwhile, rescue crews, in cluding an Air Force rescue truck, had reached most of about 100 persons who were trapped by the Southern California snow storm Saturday night. However, sheriff's deputies said some of the marooned mo torists would have to wait until today before they could be res cued. In the meantime, most of the marooned persons huddled in camps. A majority of the stranded travellers were fishermen who were lured into the mountains by the balmy weather, only to be trapped by up to 20 inches of new snow. The lowlands were meanyhile pounded by up to three and a half inches of rain. Two deaths were attributed to the California storm, one by heart attack and the other by exposure. If lie is to be a well-adjusted person who can get along with people in work and play, not only now but also as he grows up, he must stop giving all his time to reading and spend more time with his contempor aries.
