JAWBONE WA Th author of the chapter on Diseases of the Mouth, in the Cy clopedia of Medicine, Surgery & Special i s t s says pyorrhea is a "chronic suppurative in flammation of the paroden tium." Maybe that'll hold you until the au thor kindly ex plains that the Or. Bitdr parodontium is the alveolar process" (portion of jawbone containing the tooth sockets), .the peridental mem brane (lining of tooth socket) and gingiva (the gum). At one time or another recog nized authorities have ascribed pyorrhea alveolaris to hereditary predisposition; salivary calculus (stone in the duct of a' salivary gland); infection with staphyl coccus, streptococcus, spirochete, entameba; trauma (injury) -from unevenimpact of the teeth dur ing mastication. Forty years ago the tneory that pyorrhea was due to en tameba infection gained wide ac ceptance and a good deal of ipecac or its active principle eme tine was administered in injec tions or prescribed in denti frices, but without benefit. There were formerly seme "pyorrhea specialists," dentists who contrived to become so known by the paying customers. They plied a lucrative trade.. These pyorrhea specialists readi ily nicked the ever gullible wiseacres two or three times as much as an honest dentists would charge for the same or very likely better treatment. Pyorrhea specialists belong in the same category as arthritis speciaists. But people with money to squander do just love the old hokum bunkem. In the preceding piece about pyorrhea I quoted Louis I. Gross man, D. D. S., D. M. D., a recog nized authority, who said: Pyorrhea alveolaris denotes . . . manifestations which arise primarily from a functional atrophy of the alveolar process. Atrophy of the alveolar pro cess means the part of the jaw bone containing the tooth sock ets wastes away. ' The jawbone withers, shrinks in size, becomes weaKer ana lighter in weight. So does the skeleton, the frame, the stature of a person as age advances. So do the bones of a youth or a vigorous adult who is confined to bed or chair for many months, or who for any reason doesn't get enough general exercise, such as daily walk of from a hundred yards to several miles. It's the way of all bones. We erudite anthropologists cal it physical degeneration. An important contributing cause of premature jaw bone athrophy is failure to give the jaws a reasonable amount of exercise every day masticating food. What do we feed our young children? Pap and pop.
