Lehi II Crew 'Wet, Cold, Hungry' first Day Out of San Francisco; Will Continue San Francisco (U.R) The raft Lehi II, a slow boat to Hawaii, established contact Saturday with the mainland from a drift ing position somewhere in the Pacific ocean. Devere Baker, skipper of the yellow five-sided craft attempt ing to drift to the Hawaiian is lands, talked to a San Francisco radio station by ship-to-shore telephone and reported his five man crew, "cold, wet and hun gry." If he knew where the raft was, however, he did not divulge the information. ' Towed Jo Fallons The Lehi II, sister ship of a raft that cracked up on the same trip last summer, left San Fran cisco Friday. She was towed out to the Farallon islands by the tug Sea Bee and cut adrift. At that time the Lehi was 27 miles off the Golden Gate en trance to San Francisco harbor. Earlier Baker had estimated that his raft should be 50 miles southwest of San Francisco Sat urday and then average 40 miles a day. The first contact with the Lehi was made about noon Saturday through arrangement with the radio station. The Lehi had been refusing to accept any other ship-to-shore calls. "This is Baker on the raft Lehi II. We have just completed our first night. The crew is cold, wet and hungry. However, we have a very good crew. There has been no complaining or grumbling and the pressure should ease up as we adjust our selves. "We are now preparing a meal of salmon given us by the fish ing boat. We have caught none Loucks, Wyatf Seek To Succeed Boehnke Salem (U.R) State Rep. Al Loucks, former mayor of Salem, and Wendell Wyatt, Astoria's at torney, Saturday announced they will be candidates to succeed Ed. G. Boehnke of Eugene as Ore gon's Republican state chair man. Another prominent Republi can, Curtis T. Beecher of Rose burg, a retired Marine general, had been mentioned as a possible successor to Boehnke. But Beecher Friday said he was not a candidate. Boehnke announced his resig nation last week and called a meeting in Portland May 21 to choose a new state chairman. The American Cancer society allocated $5,500,000 for cancer research last year. Ironically their first meal was from an eight-pound salmon caught by 16-year-old Rich Burt leson, a member of the crew of the Sea Bee, and presented to the Lehi II just before they were cut loose Friday. Klamath Tall U.P.) A 14-year-old girl, who police said "lured" victims to isolated spots on the Klamath Indian reserva tion where they were beaten and robbed by accomplices, Sat urday was ordered sent to Hill crest School for Girls in Salem by Circuit Judge David R. Ven denburg. Sheriff's deputies said the girl was a member of a quartet which had terrorized reserva tion residents in recent weeks. One of the victims was 90-year-old Roscoe Watah. Held in Klamath county jail on robbery charges in connec tion with the gang's activities were Perry Chockfoot,23,and his wife, Julia, 19. A 16-year-old boy was being held in the county juvenile home. High Court Reverses Morrow County Decision Salem (U.R) The Oregon Su preme court has reversed a Mor row county decision by Judge William Wells which had favored the Heppner Lumber company in a case involving title to 3,300,000 feet of timber. The high court overturned the Circuit Court decision and found in favor of Mabel A. Hughes and others who are fee owners of the land. They sought to quiet their title against Heppner Lumber company's claim to the timber.
