LEHI SAILS . . . MINUS SKIPPER The raft Lehi n, with California Republic flag on
her cabin (right) putt-putts out of Aquatic Park lagoon Hawaiibound. Skipped De Vere
Baker and three crewmen arrived too late and had to hire a boat to catch up. Boat at
left will tow the Lehi to a point 30 miles from thi Golden Gate.
Lehi II Crew 'Wet, Cold, Hungry' first
Day Out of San Francisco; Will Continue
San Francisco (U.R) The raft
Lehi II, a slow boat to Hawaii,
established contact Saturday
with the mainland from a drift
ing position somewhere in the
Pacific ocean.
Devere Baker, skipper of the
yellow five-sided craft attempt
ing to drift to the Hawaiian is
lands, talked to a San Francisco
radio station by ship-to-shore
telephone and reported his five
man crew, "cold, wet and hun
gry." If he knew where the raft was,
however, he did not divulge the
information. '
Towed Jo Fallons
The Lehi II, sister ship of a
raft that cracked up on the same
trip last summer, left San Fran
cisco Friday. She was towed out
to the Farallon islands by the
tug Sea Bee and cut adrift.
At that time the Lehi was 27
miles off the Golden Gate en
trance to San Francisco harbor.
Earlier Baker had estimated
that his raft should be 50 miles
southwest of San Francisco Sat
urday and then average 40 miles
a day.
The first contact with the Lehi
was made about noon Saturday
through arrangement with the
radio station. The Lehi had been
refusing to accept any other
ship-to-shore calls.
"This is Baker on the raft
Lehi II. We have just completed
our first night. The crew is cold,
wet and hungry. However, we
have a very good crew. There
has been no complaining or
grumbling and the pressure
should ease up as we adjust our
selves. "We are now preparing a meal
of salmon given us by the fish
ing boat. We have caught none

The five-man crew took no
food or water, planning to sub

from the ocean.
Ironically their first meal was
from an eight-pound salmon
caught by 16-year-old Rich Burt
leson, a member of the crew of
the Sea Bee, and presented to
the Lehi II just before they were
cut loose Friday.

High Court Reverses
Morrow County Decision
Salem (U.R) The Oregon Su
preme court has reversed a Mor
row county decision by Judge
William Wells which had favored
the Heppner Lumber company in
a case involving title to 3,300,000
feet of timber.
The high court overturned the
Circuit Court decision and found
in favor of Mabel A. Hughes and
others who are fee owners of the
land. They sought to quiet their
title against Heppner Lumber
