SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, Mar ! 1953 Value of X-Rays Shown By Study of County TB Figures The value of regular chest x-rays of people who have no symptoms of disease is clearly demonstrated by a study of tuberculosis figures in Jackson county for the past seven years just completed by the Jackson County health department. The study reveals that 30 per cent of the tuberculosis in the county during the seven year period has been found by x-rays of the general public. The cases were found during the mobile x-ray surveys which were avail able only 10 weeks during the entire seven years. These mo bile surveys have sine been replaced by permanent x-ray centers in the hospitals. 12 Per Cent Advanced Cases Also demonstrating the value of x-raying people before symp- tnmt rlevplnn i th fart that only 12 per cent of the case found in surveys were in the advanced or moderately advanc ed stages, the survey showed. When allowed to go undetected until symptoms are produced. the study shows 65 per cent of the cases are far advanced. "When we realize each ad vanced case costs the taxpayers of this state approximately $15,000, it is easy to see how many thousands of dollars we are saving by finding these cases early before long care is re quired," Dr. E. A. Merkel, coun ty health officer, pointed out. "This, of course, is beside the -family tragedies and human suf fering saved many residents of our valley," he added. Most Cases Among Malar The study further shows that 75 per cent of the tuberculosis found in Jackson county has been among the male population over 40 years of age. "For this reason, we are espe cially urging men to have a chest x-ray at least once a year and preferably every six months," Mrs. Jack Walker, case finding chairman, stated. Permanent x-ray centers for use of the people of the county are, provided by the Jackson County Public Health associa tion at Community hospital on Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at Sacred Heart hospital on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. r tt : : t. : V i . 9 7 w J . 1 ' " ( i. Studies Show Value Of Nitrogen To Crops Nitrogen, when applied in a nitrate form, produces greater yields on spring sown oats, bar ley and wheat, according to re sults of an experiment at South ern Oregon Branch Experiment al station. The experiment, conducted last year, was on the relative effectiveness of four nitrogen fertilizers ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, calcium ni trate and urea water solution. The experiment included an ap plication of $10 worth of differ ent materials on barley, and an application of 60 pounds of ma terial on oats and wheat. The grains were seeded and fertilizers applied early in April last year, and an unfertilized area was left in each case to check the effectiveness of fer tilizers. The experiment showed a yield of 54.1 bushels an acre of barley when $1Q. worth -of am monium nitarte was applied. The value of the increase above the cost of fertilizer was $10.04, while other materials showed losses instead of increases above the cost of fertilizer. Sixty pounds of ammonium nitrate on an acre of oats pro duced 71.6 bushels an acre at a value of $11.57 above the $8.80 worth of fertilizer applied. Wheat produced from using 60 pounds of calcium nitrate totaled 26.5 bushels an acre, a value in crease of $3.45 above the ferti lizer cost of $13.56 per acre. In the experiments, fertilizer was applied to the surface, and left for spring rains to take it into the crop feeding area. How ever, because of light rainfall, much of the fertilizer was left on top of the ground, pointing out the advantage of a sub-surface machine to put fertilizer three to four inches into the soil. Nitrogen becomes available and starts working quicker when in ammonium nitrate and cal cium nitrate than in other ma terials, thus causing a greater response in the grain. Look to the Future!
