Rolarians from several southern Oregon elubt and their guests gathered in the Elks dining room Wednesday night for a dinner which observed the golden anniversary of the organization. Director Richard D. Werner states that the program will begin promptly at 8:1 p.ra. Tickets are ea sate at Pur ucker's Piano house and the Mu sic Mart in Medford. Jeatured soloist with the or chestra will be George Peckham, well knrwn basso from Seattle, Wash. Mr. Peckham, who lived in Medford as a youth and whose Barents, Mr. and Mrs. George Peckham Sr., still live at 219 Beatty street, is one at the better known singers ef the western states. Club Hears Talk On Wild Flowers Jacksonville Mrs. Harry ' O. Smith spoke April 11 to Jack sonville Garden clue members regarding the importance of wild flower conservation which she explained can be gained by edu cating the public in numerous ways. Miss Claire Hanley. intro duced the speaker. Mrs. Smith also showed pic tures of wild flowers of Orsgon, Glacier National park and scenes ia Arizona. The session was held at the home of Mrs. Robert Sorber, who served tea and other re freshments, assisted by a com mittee. The 18th anniversary ef the club also was observed during the social hour. Mrs. Lee Bort, president, pre sided, and 22 members attended. Mrs. M. O'Shea, a guest, also was awarded a prise. Roll call was answered by aaming a favorite wild flower. . A report was give en a re cent sale conducted by the club and suggestions were made for the group's part in the coming Jacksonville Jubilee parade. The next meeting will be May 19 at the home ef Mrs. Ray Coleman on Third street in Jacksonville. Here . A new group to be known as the Philharmonic Society guild was organized at a meeting of valley women held last week at Rogue Valley Country club. Pur pose of the new organization is to promote the interests ef the Philharmonic Society of South ern Oregon and of music in gene ral. Mrs. ,T. M. Popham.was elect ed chairman, with Mrs. Ralph Burgess as Ashland chairman and Mrs. Warren Butler, Grants Pass chairman. Mrs. Ralph Mat lack, Medford, is secretary of the group. First project ef the guild will be to promote the concert of the Philharmonic society to be held in Medford Thursday, May 5, and all members have tickets. A ticket booth at Barker's stors will be manned by members and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. May 1, 1S5S MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Beta Sigma fhi Chapters Hold Anniversary Dinner - Beta Sigma Phi chapters of Medford and Ashland held a formal dinner at the Medford hotel Thursday evening which observed the 24th anniversary of the sorority's founding. Sponsors and directors of the chapters were special guests and Mrs. Dolph Phipps of Med ford was guest speaker. Accordion Band To Give Concert The Eve Prentice Accordion band will present a concert in Medford Senior High school Monday, May 9 at 8 p.m. Lea Padgett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Padgett, Central Point will be featured soloist. Among her solo numbers will be . "Orpheus In The Under world Overture, "Prelude in C Sharp Minor," "Poet and Peasant Overture," "Dizzy Fin gers" and "Doll Dance." The Accordiana Girls and Ac cordionaire Boys will play sev eral intermission numbers, in cluding "Lady of Spain, "Twelfth Street Rag," "Nola, "Bumble Boogie," "Tranquillo Overture," and "Quick Silver. Ensemble numbers will be given by the entire band. Vocalists to be featured dur ing intermission are Richard Cooper, Lynn Miller and 7-year-old Sandra Charters. Larry Robertson of Trailways Bus company will come from Portland to act as master of ceremonies for the concert. The public is invited and there will be no admission charge. RebekahsTo Hold Friendship Night Friendship night for the eight Rebekah lodges in the district, including Jackson and Josephine counties, will be observed Mon day evening at a meeting of the Olive Rebekah lodge. The ses sion will open at 8 p.m., and will be held at the IOFF hall, 221 West Sixth street. - Officers are to wear formal dresses and other members are invited to do so. After the meeting a program will be given and each lodge will take part. Mrs. Charles Swingle is in charge of refresh ments. Visiting members also are invited. A highlight of the program was announcement of each chapter's "girl of the year." They are Mrs. Russell Budreau, Alpha Rho chapter, and Mrs. Nick DeWitt, and Mrs. Charles Gosha, Alpha Sigma chapter, Ashland, Alpha Beta chapter, Medford. Installation of inter-city coun cil officers was held with Miss Jacqueline Walker, retiring council president; conducting the ceremony. Installed were Mrs. Lawrence Allen, Alpha Rho, president; Mrs. Oris Goble, Alpha Beta, vice-president; Mrs. Roy Stein, Xi Mu, recording sec retary; Mrs. Charles Gosha, Alpha Sigma, Ashland, corres ponding secretary; Mrs. Charles Marrs, Alpha Rho, treasurer. New presidents of the chap ters presented the retiring pres idents with pins. Making the presentations were Mrs. Edgar Moir to Mrs. Wilson Slater, Xi Mu; Mrs. Arthur Kreisman to Mrs. Doris Lassen, Alpha Sigma; Mrs. Nils Edin to Mrs. Nick De Witt, Alpha Beta and Mrs. Tom Lytle to Mrs. John Lamberty, Alpha Rho. Miss Walker was given a council gavel pin for her year as president. Alpha Beta chapter presented a gift to the sponsor, Mrs. C. A. Eden. Rease Braley, Alpha Beta direc tor: Mrs. Lassen read a message from Walter W. Ross, founder of the sorority, during which a new degree, the order of the rose, was announced. This will be conferred on those who have been active or honorary mem bers for 15 years. Mrs. DeWitt read a founder's day pledge which all members repeated. Mrs. Phipps talked on Mexico, where she traveled last winter, and exhibited a number of ob jects brought from that country. Mrs. Phipps stated that the Mex icans have a great reverence for God, and are devoted family members. She said the nation is one of great contrasts between city civilization and primitive country living, and between wealth and poverty. The speaker commented that in recent years Mexicans of In dian ancestry are becoming more important in the life and events of the nation and that the influence of the Aztec cul ture and heritage is becoming more pronounced. Miss Walker summarized Jhe accomplishments of sorority chapters, commenting on schol arship awards, support of the Pilot school in Phoenix, camp- Lady Elks Lady Elks plan a salad lunch- eon Tuesday, May 3 at 1:30 p.m., to be followed, by an afternoon of cards. The event will be held at the Elks club lounge and wives of all Elks lodge members are invited. Hostesses will be Mrs. H. J. Boyd, Mrs. Claude Hoover and Mrs. Raymond 8. Wise. ships awarded and charitable work among the needy. It was announced that Mrs. Lassen and Mrs. Allen were leaving the next morning to at tend a regional conference in. Vancouver, B.C., and they were presented corsages. Mrs. Roger Note was decora tions chairman, and these were in a Spanish--theme. Mrs. Anne Davis loaned dolls from her col lection for table decorations. About 60 attended the dinner.
