SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, May I, I95S USING BRIEFCASE FOR SUPPORT, Dr. Jonas Salk gives auto graph to Kenneth Vinograd, 7, Arlington, Va., when discoverer of polio vaccine arrives In Washington to receive special citation from President Elsenhower in White House. (International) A Nkhol's Worth of . . . Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United PrM FmNi Writer Human Nichols Washington (U.R) A fre quent whispered warning around the floor of the House of Repre sentatives is: "Jiggers, man! Get your foot off the arm of your chair. Yonder comes olfl George." . 'Old George is the Mr. Man ners of the House, and now his colleagues tend to their etiquette when he is about. 'Rep. George Anthony Don dero, the Republican from Royal Oak, Mich., took the members to task recently in a right from the shoulder speech on the subject of floor behavior. "The response," the Michigan law maker said in a chat we had, "has been gratifying." The Chamber, the way Don dero sees it, represents the forum of the American people and the members ought to keep that in mind and conduct themselves like gentlemen. Criticism Heard In his speech, the congressman faid: "Members who have served here any length of time have heard with chagrin and embar rassment the harsh criticism from the visitors directed at what appears to them a lack of reverence, dignity and respect for this historic chamber." The gray-haired, dignified Re publican jacked up his friends on the floor about reading news papers during the sessions, stray ing in and out of the Chamber, walking in front of whomever is speaking, and generally playing hob with good manners. Once, while Dondero was speaking, the chair had to rap for order to cut down the din in the back of the hall. Rules Said Unstudied "Trouble is,' 'he told me, "the members haven't studied the rules. There is a rule against smoking any place in the Cham ber. You fellows in the press gallery don't do it. But members go behind the rail in the back and drag away at cigarettes. And they address one another as 'John or 'Harry' or plain 'you.1 It's disrespectful. It should be the 'gentleman from Missouri, or wherever." The Michigan representative has received considerable mail from pepole around the country about his speech. He showed me a letter from a fellow in California, who sug gested that a "good kick in the pants is just what most of those fellows need to remind them they aren't in a barroom.", The Red Cross disaster service provided rehabilitation aid to an average of one family every 75 minutes in 1934. 1 ja Sopifinrelo o o is smart . . . it's thrifty ... id you ever know a squirrel who didn't have a nut or two tucked away?
