TEH MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Athletics Nab 3rd From Red Sox With Power, Pitching; Indians Down Hats in 17-lnning Thriller Br CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Sports Writer No one is calling them "Bou dreau's Bombers" yet, but it was worth noticing today that the first five hitters in the Kansas City lineup have smashed 17 homers as many as any other American League team has made altogether. There is power in the top of that lineup and not just Vic Power, either. He's the leadoff man with three homers, but look what comes after him. Bill Ren na, hitting next, also has three homers then comes Jim'Finigan with four, Gus Zernial with four and Bill Wilson with three. And to make the joy run full cycle for Kansas City fans there' a home-grown sore-armed pitch ing castoff from the Cardinals, Cloyd Boyer, who hurled the A'i to their third straight triumph, 6-2, over Boston Wednesday. Boyer gave up three hits and received fine support from Ren na, Zernial and Wilson who hit homers, Zernial's coming with two men on base. Tied With White Sox The only other crew with as many homers is the White Sox and they made eight of their 17 against Kansas City, seven in that 29-6 nightmare of last Sat urday. In a 17-inning thriller, longest In the majors since June 23 of last season. Cleveland downed Washington, 6-5, on a rally touched off by Joe Altobelli's double. Jim Hegan's sacrifice and two intentional passes, ordered by Nat Manager Charley Dres sen, loaded the bases but Bobby Avila nullified the strategy with a game-winning sacrifice fly. Iri other American League games the White Sox pounded out a 14-hit, 13-4 triumph over the Yankees and Detroit topped Baltimore, 11-3. In the National League, Brook lyn topped Cincinnati . 7-2 in a "walkathon" in which the Dodg ers drew 13 passes and the Red legs six, Milwaukee defeated the Giants 9-6, and Pittsburgh won from Chicago, 4-1, on Bob Pur key's four-hitter. St. Louis at St. Mary's Graders Defeat Talent 15-3 St. Mary's grade school blasted Talent 15 to 3 yesterday at Tal ent behind the one-hit tossing of Gary Miksche. The Knights got eight runs in the second inning of the three-inning mix. Miksche fanned three batters but he also walked seven. Paul Pavlat hit two doubles for St. Mary's. betf The txtra yens enrich IQ its great Bourbon flavor OLD HICKORY I Philadelphia was postponed be cause of cold weather. Billy Loes gave only one hit before a blistered finger forced his retirement in the eighth and Eugene Raps Salem 8-1 In NW Loop Br UNITED PRESS The Northwest League was a contented little baseball circuit today with six teams sporting identical 1-1 records and. the seventh member, Tri-City, still sitting out a bye. In last night's games, the three teams which had lost open ing night turned in victories to make things a cozy .500 up and down the percentage table. We natchee took Yakima 8-1, Eu gene duplicated that score with an 8-1 verdict over Salem and Lewiston clobbered Spokane 15 2. Right hander Bill Franks el bowed Lewiston's victory giving up but two hits while the Broncs collected 15 off two Spokane hurlers. Lewiston tallied 11 runs in the first three frames and Franke coated home. Eugene's Emeralds got seven hit hurling from Berlyn Hodges and got riled up in the late inn ings to take Salem. Granny Glad stone's two-run homer in the sixth gave the Emeralds a 2-1 edge and they finished strong with single runs in the seventh and eighth and a four-run jack pot in the ninth. Lefty Ralph Buckingham doled out four hits to lead We natchee to its victory over Yaki ma. He fanned ten and walked seven as the Chiefs went ahead in the fourth and finished strong. OSC Bounces Idaho 16-3 Corvallis .. (U.R) Oregon State finally got in its first Northern Division baseball game of the 1955 season yesterday and made it a whopping success by downing Idaho 16-3. Governor. Pat terson jnas appointed, key per sonnel around the state to head up this program. . The program is sponsored by the' governor's committee on nat ural resources, and one of the members of this group is P. W. Schneider, state game director. The week" is designed to focus attention on all of our national resources of which wildlife is Keep Dogs, Cats From Roaming, Commission Asks Portland Though the wea therman may not be indicating it in some areas of the state, spring has arrived. This means one thing to the wild birds, that it is time to nest. It also is the most danger ous time of the year for them. Though winter weather often works more hardships on them, predators take their toll now, according to the Oregon State Game Commission. Among some of the worst predators on nests are free run ing domestic cats and dogs. They not only make a meal of the nesting birds, but if they don't catch the bird, they destroy the nest. Fall hunting populations of game birds are dependent on good spring crops of young ones. Disturbed nests don't make for good crops of young birds. The game commission has urged all pet owners to keep their animals from roaming the fields for the next few months and give the birds a chance to raise their families.
