S. highway 101 through Oregon in the interstate system. Linking the road to the inter state system would solve two major problems, according to Charles Ross, chairman of the Oregon Coast Association's highway committee. They are construction of a Columbia river bridge at Astoria, and elimina tion of the Brookings - Gold Beach bottleneck. Object of the meeting would be to adopt a resolution asking for introduction of state legis lation to request federal funds from Congress. Bock Stairs: Golf Behavior Average By MERRIMAN SMITH ; United Prss Whit House Writer Washington (U.R) Back stairs at the White House: While President Eisenhower usually play golf in fairly opu lent settings and with some of the game's top performers, he's really an average golfer in his behavier on the links. Like any public course backer Mr. Eisenhower doesn't like having to wait on the first tee. He likes to get out onto the course in a hurry. Because of his high position, he usually does. Ho hates to lose golf balls al though he gets 'em free by the hundred. "Keep your eye ' on that one," hell shout to his caddy when he pops one into the rough. He's never satisfied with his score and always convinced he should have done better. the A.P. affair in New York where he is speaking today. The DAR presented some what different case. Mrs. Eisen hower has been resting up from a late winter illness and getting the new farm house in order at Gettysburg, Pa. She decided she would not re turn for the DAR conference and the President went to spend the week end with her instead of dropping in on the women's or ganization. According to his aides, he had planned only to escort his wife to one convention session. When she decided riot to at tend, he would not go alone. The DAR may not like it, but that is the way Mr. Eisenhower is. Quite a few raised eyebrows locally last week when the Pres ident failed to visit the conven tions of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The explanation concerning the ASNE which meets here every spring, is easy. When Mr. Eisenhower first took office, he said he would go to one of three big newspaper affairs each year the ASNE, the American Newspapers' Publishers Associa tion and the annual A.P. lunch. His first year in office he ad dressed the ASNE here. That was the occasion when he deliv ered a memorable foreign policy speech, although he was of the verge of fainting from the agony of an upset stomach. Last year he spoke to the ANPA in New York. . Czechoslovakia Premier Dropped by Communists Vienna (U.R) Communist Czechoslovakia's Premier Viliam Siroky has been dropped from the Politburo of the Slovak Com munist party, Prague Radio, has announced . . The broadcast gave no expla nation for Siroky's ouster from the nine-man Politburo, top party organization of the province of Slovakia. " - ' The announcement did not af fect Siroky's position as Pre mier, though it indicated -he might be on his way out. Damages Sought by Robert Davison Robert Davison seeks $40,000 damages from R. D. Chamber lain as the result of back injur ies suffered in October 1953 when a log loader overturned, according to a complaint filed in circuit court last week. Davison, employed by Cham berlain in " a logging' operation, maintains in the complaint, that he received the injuries when he jumped from the loader as it overturned. Higher Education Budget Reduction Recommended Salem (U.R) A Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee . has recommended a cut of $1,150,000 from an overall budget request of $45,906,747 from the State Board of Higher Education. " Some $900,000 of the cut in volved money from the General Fund and the subcommittee rec ommended that the board restore most of that amount by raising tuition, sales and service fees.
