SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday. ?rll 28, 19SS Experimental Grass Plantings on View, Public is Invited Experimental plantings of nine varieties of lawn grasses, made in the fall of 1953, are open for public inspection at the South ern Oregon Experimental farm just west of Talent, it was re ported today. They are grown side by side so that the merits of each can be easily observed. The experi ment is of particular value to those planning to plant a new lawn, it was pointed out. The varieties being grown include kentucky bluegrass, merion blue grass, creeping red fescue, illa- hee red fescue? chewing fescue, highland bent, astoria' bent, alta fescue and hard fescue. Two other plots contain va rious mixtures of the lawn grasses. Planting Rale Told Grasses in the demonstration were planted in October, 1953, at the following rates per 250 square feet of area: Bentgrasses, 34 pound, alta fescue, 2 pounds, other fescues and bluegrasses Vz pounds per 250 square feet The mixtures were composed of equal parts by weight of each of the three grasses used and seeded at the rate of 2 pounds per 2o0 square feet. Ammonium sulfate was ap plied at the rate of one pound per 100 square feet before plant ing, also each spring and fall since. All plots were sprayed with amine 2, 4-D in the late spring of 1954 at the rate of one pound of actual acid per acre for control of broadleaf weeds which were principally dande lions and plantain. Vary in Qualities There is no one type or variety of lawn grass that is best for all situations. Some require more water than others. Some will tol erate shade better than others. They differ in their creeping ten dencies, hence in ability to re cover from scars after the neigh borhood football tussle. Some sneak into the flower beds and shrubbery much . worse than ethers. They differ in amount of cushioning effect, density, and color. Lawns require time, effort and money to establish and maintain. Time and thought spent in se lecting the best type of grass for the conditions should pay good dividends in satisfaction for years. Prison Threatened For Extortion Threats Portland (U.PJ Authorities warned today that persons con victed of extortion bomb threats could receive up to five years in prison. The wave of threatening calls continued yesterday. Jefferson high school was evacuated after a call yesterday afternoon. The gymnasium at Grants Pass high school was cleared during the afternoon after a call, although the rest of the school stayed open. No bombs were found. Labor Council Favors Pinball Licenses Portland U.R) Portland Cen tral Labor council reversed a previous decision last night and came out in favor of licensing pinball machines. f Teamsters, culinary workers and building service employees combined forces to put over the vote. They predicted the loss of hundreds of jobs if pinballs go Action of the council followed last week's appeals by the Ore gon Licensed Beverage associa tion and the Bowling Operator's Association, who predicted a drastic falloff of employment in their business if they lose pin ball machines. Filming of Movie Planned Near Bend Bend -OJ.R) United Artists plans to film a cinemascope western in the Benham falls, area of the Deschutes river 10 miles south of here, according to Di rector Andre DeToth. Estate Planning Talks Due at Session Thursday Estate clannine to assure maximum benefit to the heirs will highlight an estate and trust forum which the U. S. Na tional bank will present Thurs day, April 28, in Medford. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Jackson hotel with Allan F. Perry, Medford branch manager, presiding. The duties of an administrator or executor will be explained in detail, as well as the necessity for probate proceedings. The management functions of a cor porate trust department will be outlined bv one of the speakers who will also point out the pro tective features and safeguards necessary for estate and trust administration. SHEPPARD HEARING DUE Cleveland, O. (U.R) Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard's attorneys will argue tomorrow morning with the help of an expert for a new trial for the osteopath con victed of wife slaying. Fishing Violations Penalized in Court Two oeonle pleaded guilty and were fined in district court yesterday on angling law vio lations. Bates Lindley Hamer, 66, of route 1, box 7, Rogue River, was fined $25 and court costs on a charge of angling with prohib ited methods. The charge in volved use of two line while fishing in Kelly slough. - Jaqueline Louise Cox, 18, of route 2, box 163A, Central Point, -was fined $25 and court costs on a charge of angling without a license. Both $25 fines were sus pended. HOSPITALS ATTACKED San Francisco (U.R) Many hospitals are under attack for employing radiologists, patholo gists and anesthetists on salaries and then billing patients for their services, a specialist' in medical law said today. BILL RECOMMENDED Salem (U.R) A bill that would set up a water resources board in Oregon was given a do pass recommendation by the Senate Natural Resources Com mittee last night. The measure has been approved by the House.
