Med Treasure by (fahfy, Carved Eagle Not Made for The gilded eagle looked sad ly out of place standing on a table among tarnished salt shak ers, odd pieces of china and grimy vases that hadn't held a flower in years. He was a sizeable bird about 16 inches from beak to tail, tip and had been carved in a posi tion of folding his wings as he settled onto a wooden ball atop a post about half a foot high. The post, in turn, was attach ed to a wooden block in what seemed a decidedly rickety man ner. I picked the piece up and turned' it over. Sure enough, a single nail was all that held the two together. More interesting by far, how ever, than that crude carpentry was the underside of the eagle itself. The underbody end sides of the wings were carefully and beautifully detailed in marked contrast to the upper sides. In fact, it was obvious it was the work of a very able artist. The top of the head, for ex ample, was devoid of any carv ing so smooth that I had sim ply assumed the artist had left it that way to indicate a bald headed eagle. But if so, why was the rest of the upper parts de void of feathers? On my third visit I just leaned across the table and MAN FINDS FIRST EDITION Though there wasn't a cracker barrel or an old-fashioned cof fee mill to be seen, the place was a typical country store, handling as wide a variety of goods as the Indiana farming region would need. Consequently I was not at all surprised to see a few shelves of books, all of them new in the sense of not being second hand an important distinction since the dust jackets of some were pretty dog-eared. Nor was it sur prising to see that one of the titles was "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" Kansas' answer to England's "Alice In Wonder land." I felt a twinge of nostalgia, and pulled down the magic book by L. E. Baum. The truth didn't dawn on me until after I had bought the piece for S2.50. My niece Judith saw it in stantly. The bird had been carved as the top ornament for some old flagpole and the artist was not concerned with work ing for the birds. The truth was rather discon certing to my hopes for a find that would turn out to ' have been made by some master wood carver who could be positively identified. Nonetheless, I took the piece home, got a new block into which I countersank the pole. fixing it with an iron glue, and then set the piece on the hall table to await results. They were -rot long in com ing. and most satisfactory. Frank denials that I positively knew who the artist was, other than that he was early American and possibly Paul Revere and it could be he, at that have re sulted in offers up to $140. I have refused them all. Noth ing less than $1,000 would do now, lor I've got at least that much in laughs over the specu lations and comments of visitors. did say. So, I pulled out an- other St. Gaudens coin, identi- cal with hers, except for the per- iods and the date, which was 1908, laid it on a $20 bill and said 'Give.' I told her I needed the coin to change my luck, and finally when I added another $20 she made the swap." When Phil showed the coin to me, I pointed out that he hadn't made too good a deal, His had the rolled edg", which catalogues at $400 uncirculated, but in the condition of his it wasn't actually worth more than $200. "I know," he said, "but you know I never enjoyed getting a coin so much. Don't forget, I gave that dame another S30 for having my fortune told, but even if it had been twice as much I would still have enjoyed it." OF 'OZ IN COUNTRY STORE "You going to buy the book, Mister, or read it here?" It wasn't a clerk, just another customer. But his interruption of my recollections of a happy childhood stamped him as an of fensive fellow. Contriving an air of easy hauteur. I informed him I was buying the book. And I did buy it for $5 though I might not have if the other chap hadn't hung around to see that I did. When I got home the thought occurred to me that the book might have a premium value. Auction records showed it did have, the first issue having brought as high as $112.50 re cently. And mine was a first printed in Chicago, 1900 with perfect type in the last line page 100, and a colophon with 11 lines on the back lining paper.
