' The first two suggestions were made in an eight-page article on "the common cold" compiled by .a non-medical editor of the de partment of medicine. The third suggestion was made by a no torious quack who has an M.D. degree which he would trade, with S1.000 to boot, for the de gree P. H. D. conferred by any recognized educational institu tion. Further folderol in the maga zine article included these start ling discoveries: 1. A low temperature will not affect your resistance to a cold. 2. Sleeping in a draft may start one. You dumb subscribers would n't understand even if the edi tor of the medicine department were to explain what "resis tance" means and neither would the editor. But it is al ways good for a few lines. In Yankeeland authorities on "the common cold" will prob ably continue marketing such pieces as long as you like, not withstanding the fact that (as casually noted in this particu lar piece) thai in actual experi ments on volunteer subjects in England inoculation the investigators concluded that ex cosure to wetting, chills and drafts had no effect, and that Changes in Business Names Listed Locally Six changes in assumed busi ness names have been filed in the office of the Jackson county clerk. In the eight-page piece the editor of the medicine depart ment blended the best nine teenth century hokum with a few dashes of common sense. For instance, the erudite author a scribes to Dr. Robert J. Hueb ner, head of a team of United States Public Health Service and Johns Hopkins men studying the question, a "new concept of the common cold." Please pay close attention, lunkheads, be cause this is pretty confusing. "The way we look at it here," the editor quoted Dr. Huebner, "this is a problem of multiple respiratory diseases caused by several different agents. The problem will not be solved by taking up arms against a ficti tious thing called "the common cold." Call that . a new concept? At one point the editor of the medicine section of the maga zine virtually calls you laymen ninnyhammers: "What is this 'common cold'? Actually there is no such thing." Who's nutty now? Since Tony was a pup I've jbeen trying to tell you (fill in I the blanks) that if a doctor pre j tends to diagnose your illness as just a bad you-know-what and tells you to keep well under the covers lest it "turn" or "devel op" into a real illness you've been had.
