Mareh 7, 195S Alaska Cuties Brave 30-Be low Weather To Hold Water Ballet Fairbanks, Alaska U.R) The weather outside was 30-below, but 30 Alaska cuities traded fur lined parkas and muk-luks for bathing suits yesterday to open the annual Fairbanks Winter Carnival. Sounds crazy, and two months ago, when it all started in the mind of a wandering Texan, the sourdoughs hereabouts would have bet their last silver dollar against a water ballet. Crowd Roars Approval But that's just what happened and more than 1000 servicemen and townspeople, all that cpuld get into the Baker field house swimming pool at Eielson AFB 26 miles from here, roared their approval. The ballet marked the opening of a nine-day celebra tion heralding the coming of spring. The idea for an aquacade, in the middle of an Arctic winter, came from "Blitz" Griffin, the wandering Texan, who came to Alaska four years ago. Corporation Plans Atomic Research In Near Future San Di2go (U.R) The Con vair Division of General Dyna mics Corp. is planning to es tablish its own department of atomic research and develop ment in the near future, accord ing to aircraft sources. These sources said that top scientists who have been em ployed by the Atomic Energy Commission and other nuclear projects are being quietly signed up by Convair. Built Nautilus . General Dynamics Corp. was the builder of the first atomic powered submarine, the Nau tilus, but did not construct the power unit. It is generally known that Convair engineers have been working for two years on plans for an atomic-powered, long range airplane, capable of cir cling the world without stopping. Eddie Jones, assistant to the president of Convair, would not outright confirm that his com pany was entering the atomic field. Neither would he out right deny it. "We've been doing a lot of dreaming," Jones said. "We might have something to an-1 r.ounce about the end of nexti week. ' First call for women who could swim went out in Janu ary. Housewives, high school girls, Alaska university co-eds and business women, about 60 of them, bought out every swim ming suit in town. Thirty swim mers were selected. Came rehearsal time, and Griffin discovered some prob lems. For one thing, he had never seen a water ballet. But that didn't stop the Texan. He had an idea of how one ought to look because he had seen some pictures. Griffin and two assist ants, Mildred Scanlon and Gina Baker, worked out swimming routines to represent the 12 months of the year. A month's hard work by the girls and Grif fin had Alaska's first water bal let ready to go. Only Part of Carnival The water show is only a part of the big carnival, however. Included also will be the se lection of "Miss Alaska" to rep resent the territory in the Miss University contest at. Long Beach, Calif. . Sporting events include ski contests, curling bonspiels, and the North American Champion ship Sled Dog Derby, sponsored by the Alaska Dog Mushers as sociation. Joint Command in Far East Forecast Taipeh (U.R) Adm. Robert E. Carney, U. S. chief of naval operations, has disclosed that a joint Chinese American .com mand probably may be set up here to organize the defense of Formosa against possible Com munist attack. Carney said planning for the joint command is not complete, but added that the recent Chinese-American defense pact made it extremly likely one will be formed. "A joint command is always necessary when forces of two nations get together," he said. Carney expressed his views at a press conference shortly be fore boarding a plane for "Hono lulu and eventually to the Unit ed States. Heavy weather Sat ur d a y brought fighting along the- em battled China coast to a stand still. - Nationalist Chinese mili tary quarters said not a shot was fired along the 150-mile "front." Hundreds off Families (Fleeing GDhio lover Flood Waters Chincinnati, O. U.R) The! flooding Ohio river swept into the low-lying river towns today leaving hundreds more families homeless. Some 603 families and 114 business places have been evacu ated in communities along the river. More than a third of these were from Hamilton county here and surrounding areas. The Ohio Highway patroL re ported the closing of about 48 highways. From Pittsburgh to Marietta, O., the water was decreasing at the rate of one-tenth foot per hour, the Ohio Highway patrol reported. Downstream from that point the water was rising by one-fifth foot per hour. The wa ter here apparently had reached a crest of 56.7 feet, nearly five feet over flood stage. It was predicted earlier that a crest would reach 60 feet here by Wednesday. Hundreds of other families in West Virginia, Kentucky and In diana were driven from their homes as the river invaded areas in those states. The flood waters flowed into some areas of Wheeling, Point Pleasant, Parkersburg and Hunt ington, W. Va., Sunday. High water and slides blocked numer ous roads including the multi million dollar West Virginia turnpike. Part of Wheeling island and part of Wheeling Downs race track were inundat ed. The Guyan river, all but iso lated Logan, W. Va., and at last reports was at 22 feet, two above flood stage. But the crest is mov ing downstream rapidly.
