Four white-hot craters are throw . ing molten lava 50 to 100 feet in air. Officials declared state of emergency. (International) Colorful Relics of Niagara History Found Niagara Falls, N. Y. (U.R) Excavations for the giant face lifting of Niagara Falls are turn ing up relics of colorful Niagara frontier history. The U. S." Corps of Engineers recently found an old beer bar rel, an axle and a cap-and-ball musket. The relics were uncov ered above Horseshoe Falls where the engineers dried out a section of Niagara River as part o a $17,500,000 remedial project. Dr. Marvin A. Rapp, an area historian, said he believes the barrel and axle are at least 100 years old. The musket is equip ped with a bayonet and is in scribed on the side with the drawing of a crown and the word "Potsdam." Rapp says it "pos sibly" dates back to 1796, when British forces abandoned Ft. Niagara. Bend Man Winner of Photography Award Rochester, N.Y. (U.R) Joe Van Wormer of Bend, Ore., and Robert L. Leatherman of San Bernardino, Calif., were among those named Saturday as win ners of Rochester medals in the national Salon of Photography. President Lowell N. Miller said a record submission of 7023 photos by 1791 photographers in 37 countries made this year's competition the most successful since the salon's founding in 1929. Other top award winners in cluded Ollie Fife, Washington; Barton King, Niagara Falls, N. Y., John Kubilis, Athens, Ala.; Frank J. Heller, Bartlesville, Paul J. Wolf, Putnan Valley, N. Y.; Dr. B. J. Kaston, New Brit ain, Conn.,- and Lewis F. Miller, Chicago. Man Chokes To Death On Piece of Lobster Newport Beach, Calif. (U.R) John R. Gloniger, 64, Pittsburgh, choked to death on a piece of lobster while his son-in-law, a physician, tried in vain to save him, police reported. Dr. George J. Fleury said he applied artificial respiration and other techniques at a local res taurant Saturday night until three other physicians and an ambulance arrived. Fleury said his father-in-law had been in failing health and that choking was a common ailment with him.
