r, iirf IMF Is That So? a By Eugene Burnt Ranger-Naturalist Who am I? As animate go, I am long lived, sometimes attaining 50 years. I live with one mate, for good or . bad, until death does us part. Tamed, in some coun tries, I am put out to herd. In my family, there are about 0 species nearly all in the northern hemisphere. Couples usually look alike ex cept the male is larger. We weigh from 4 to 14 pounds. I change my plumage once a year and during that time I am flightless. During migration I am able to touch 70 miles an hour. I have covered up to 1,000 miles without resting. Most of us are noisy way farers talking away as we ' make our steady migratory flights. During spring and summer we ' feed freely on large insects, along with plant leaves, seeds, . berries and even roots. Later perhaps small crustaceans. But . our chief food is largely vegetal. Our nests are bulky, composed , of twigs, weeds and reeds and 3 then softly lined with down , t pulled out of our breasts by the , beakful. The female lays a large creamy-white egg every other day and incubates .the-eggs with in 23-28 days. Precocious Youngsters Usually there are four to six young, rather precocious young s sters. , The parents are usually wild, "defying their enemy by opening : their mouths and hissing. Small- . ' er adversaries are seized in the strong hard bill and beaten to death with the wings, e Having lived with man since the dawn of history, my uses ' are many: I offer a great lump s of savory meat; I lay quantities of huge eggs; my grease has . been a stand-by remedy for t colds in chests and whatever ails . you; my fat is used for cooking; my down for quilts; my quills J: for writing; my flight feathers : can" be bundled into , hearth brushes. s I am: A. Israel Envoy Asks For Military Aid Portland (U.R) Ebba Eban, Israel ambassador to the United Slates and United Nations dele gate, last night renewed his 1 pleas for United States military aid to his country. Eban noted that the U.S., Britain and Turkey all have made military pacts with the six Arab states. That no such agree- ments had been made with Israel he said, caused "a high improper balance in the relationships of the Middle Eastern countries. The ambassador charged that Egypt had maintained "a tight blockade" of Israel through the Suez canal, and that other Arab nations refused to trade with Israel. Eban said the "stringent block ade" of Israel by the six Arab states was in defiance of the se curity council of the United Na tions. . "Choctaw Scrip" is scrip is sued to Choctaw Indians in Mis sissippi in lieu of lands to which thev were entitled under the treaty of Sept., 27, 1930. I STEAK I Legislative By ERIC ALLEN JR. Mail Tribune City Editor Salem Frank Bash Jr., who was elected "president of the League of Oregon Cities" during the Elks student government day earlier "this week, was a legis lative visitor Wednesday after noon. Young Bash, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Bash,' Medford, (he's a Copco vice-president; she's chairman of the Republican Cen tral committee) flew from Med ford to Eugene Wednesday morn ing, where he inspected the headquarters of the league with Diamond Flynn and Herman Kehrli. Flynn, former mayor of Med ford, is president of the League, and Kehrli is the manager. The group then drove to Salem, where the youth was shown through the Capitol, met a number of the legislators, and then flew home Wednesday night. There were many southern Oregon people in Salem, on er rands of one kind or another, Wednesday. Lester Adams, manager of the Oregon Milk Producers, was in town working in behalf of bills sponsored by his group, which recently elected Dick Wester berg, Ashland, as president. Adams, with his wife, owns a dairy ranch in the Applegate. Bob Shaw, secretary of the Medford Teamsters union local, also was here, with other team sters officials. Frank Van Dyke, a former speaker of the house, flew in Wednesday morning with his son, John, for a day. He was to have appeared at a committee hearing Wednesday evening, held on measures to make the Oregon Liquor Control commis sion a paid full-time group, and to abolish the group in favor of a one-man organization. Van Dyke opposes both meas ures, favoring the present set up, and "unofficially" was repre senting a number of non-profit clubs who feel the same way. Claude Davis, formerly of Medford and former president of the Southern Oregon Truckers league, is in Salem. He is now a resident -of Coos Bay. State Sen. Mark Hatfield, Salem, who made the principal talk at student government day in Medford, returned to Salem early Wednesday, to be met by overcast skies. He got in a good deal of good-natured kidding with Sen. Phil Lowry about how the sun was shining when he left Medford, only, to come back to gray skies. iiatfield, by the way, young. Seven Men Picked Oil Alaska Slope Anchorage, Alaska (U.R) ' Helicopters picked seven men off the bleak, treeless slopes of Mt. Susitna yesterday in the face of gale winds and ava lanches which thundered down the mountain where 11 Navy men died in a plane crash eight days ago. The seven-man rescue team recovered one unidentified body in the twisted debris of a Navy Neptune bomber strewn over 500 yards of the mountain's perilous slopes. However, Maj. Wayne L. Dan iel, flying safety officer at El mendorf Air Force Base and a member of the ground party, said efforts to recover the re maining ten bodies had to be abandoned because the lives of the seven men were endangered. Rita Hayworth, Mate To Make Own Movies Hollywood (U.R) Rita Hay- worth and her husband, crooner Dick Haymes, said today they will start making pictures on their own after the actress has fulfilled a two picture obliga tion to Columbia Studio. Their company, Crystal Bay Productions, will release two two films through United Artists. Miss Hayworth will star in both, while Haymes will be the pro ducer. Haymes, sporting a new beard appeared in court yesterday and won a continuance of his con tempt of court hearing until March 10. His ex-wife, Nora Ed- dington Flynn Haymes, has claimed he owes her $3800 in back alimony. EAST SIXTH Letter and personable, is a favorite with many of the younger folk who visit the session. He's widely known for his speeches and other political activities, which, combined with his looks and affability, make him one of the most sought-after senators for autographs. Wednesday afternoon he spent a good 15 minutes in the Capitol lobby signing autographs for a group of young schoolgirls here from Corvallis. Autograph-hunting, and col lecting copies of the state seal which are passed out by both the governor's and secretary of state's offices, is a popular and legitimate sport for the younger fry. One of the favorite tricks of some of those here is to get a group oi Kias ana sic em ' on some unsuspecting lODDyist or news man for autographs, warn ing the youngsters in advance that the man is bashful "and will probably deny he's a distinguish ed senator." She owns twelve mink coats, Incidentally, on her last trip to Europe, Maria had forty pieces of baggage in which, among other articles of attire, were 100 dresses. She is 31 and has had four husbands so far. Hangtown Fry Just what is a "Hangtown Fry?" Seems to be a difference of opinion as to this. The dish was born in Placerville, Calif., formerly known as "Hangtown.' Clair Butts, Placerville restau rateur, says a Hangtown fry is a mixture of oysters, eggs and bacon. Nothing else. Briefly Who was the most beautiful of all the Ziegfeld Follies girls? Flo Ziegfeld said it was Olive Thomas. I knew Olive well. Her real name was Duffy. She was from Pittsburgh . . . Italy has a regularly scheduled railroad train that averages 150 miles an hour. A train like that could take you from New -York to Philadelphia in thirty-six min utes. Get It Right " Jayrie Mansfield of Dallas is named as "the 100th Texas girl to" sign a film contract." Joan Crawford of San Antonio is named as "the first." Joan is the greatest film star born in Texas but was not the first to sign a contract. That was Bessie Love of Midland, Texas. Bessie signed with D. W. Griffith in 1916. Sec ond was "Texas'" Guinan of Waco, Texas, who in 1917 signed a contract to appear in a series of two reel western films in which she was billed as "the two gun girl." Prediction "You will never lose another fight." That is what an astrol oger told British heavyweight Don Cockell several years ago. Since that time Don has won ten, straight fights. However, the stargazer's prediction is due for a terrific test. Don is scheduled to meet Rocky Marciano who has won forty-seven straight fights. That s what the l-ianrlwritinff exoerts say ... In Philadelphia there is a popular restaurant named Benny the Bum's Steakhouse. A very .un usual name for an eatery. How ever. I still believe tops for rmaint restaurant names is Ptomaine Tommy's in Los An geles. Get . It Right Note a reference to "the 400 left-handed men mentioned in the Biblical passage." It was 700 men. The passage (Judges 20:16) is as follows: "Among all this people (the children of , Benja min) there were 700 chosen men left-handed: every one could sling stones at an hair-breadth, and not miss."
