Archie. Rice, representing the Corvallis firm of Cornell, How land,. Hayes and Merryf ield, is to be here this week to further discuss terms of the city-water district contract proposed. City officials, said that there is a question as to the legality of the city connecting with the district and paying for the cost of part of the construction, al though not retaining any owner ship of the main. Medford water department of ficials appeared at the meeting and told the councilmen that the Central Point water supply is only about half of what it should be for a city of 2,000 persons, in figuring the summer pressure reaching the city. . A connection with the district would give the city a circular system and more than enough water supply and pressure for its needs,-they said. February 24, 1855 Your Health and Its Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady, 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. OXYGEN DEFICIT AND C V D Some readers may remember that I cited the statement of recoenized medical authority, enables the damaged heart "to do more work with the same expendi ture of ener gy," and called it absurd. I begged physi- Dr. Brady cians or physi ologists who do not consider the statement absurd to tell me about it. So far, only the in evitable sophomores have sent me essays. I have thought about it a good deal, and about deep breathing. After all, the purpose of both the circulation and respiration is to deliver oxygen to cells, tissues, organs. I have on occa sion observed that you can't hoist yourself with your own boot straps and you can't breathe more deeply than you ordinarily breathe for more than a few minutes. Breathing, like the breathing, like the . beating of the heart and the motor and secretory action of the alimen tary tract, is automatically (au tonomically) regulated. You may attempt to regulate or control these vital functions by will power or by the use of drugs, but you will succeed only in showing your ignorance. Voluntarily breathe more deeply than ordinarily for a minute or two or for 3 minutes if you can do so that long, and your breathing for the next minute or two or three will be shallow enough to put you right back where you were before. Still, I myself regularly prac tice and I urge everybody to practice the Belly Breathing ex ercise, which I consider one of the seven keys (send 25c and stamped, self -addressed enve lope for booklet The 7 Keys lo Vite). B. B. is a name for this exer cise which even a prude can use without blushing. C. V. D. means cardiovascular degeneration, heart-artery wear ing out, slow heart muscle fail ure, myocarditis, arteriosclero sis, angina pectoris, coronary occulation or thrombisis, apo plexy. Anoxia, oxygen deficit, insuf ficient supply of oxygen to cells and tissues, subnormal oxygena tion is the essential cause of C V. D. in whichever way may be manifest. Some of my thinking about this has been disturbing, I must admit. It has reached a pretty how-de-do, indeed. Here I am, advocating the practice of B.B., when along comes a doddering old geezer who tells you it is futile to try to hoist . yourself with your own bootstraps, and on closer scrutiny he turns out to be the veritable Ol' Doc Brady who writes this column. I still practice B. B. however, Ford Theatre Presents for the FIRST TIME ON TV ! TOO OLD FOR DOLLS STAMINO LARAINI DAY FRANCHOT TONE KBES-TV 9:30 PJW. B. will improve your cir culation by getting stagnant blood out of the great splanch nic pool, the vast network of small blood vessels in the abdo men which are capable of hold ing a quarter of the entire vol ume of blood out of action, so to speak. Incidentally, B. B. is not the same as ordinary deep breath ing. It is physiological. Ordi nary deep breathing is not.
