TWO MEDFORD (ORZCOH) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday February JO. 1953 County Democrats Hail Morse Entry Into Party Ranks Response of Jackson county Democrats to Senator-Wayne L. Morse , joining their party has been overwhelmingly favorable, according to Democratic Chair man Robert A. Boyer. Telephone calls have not only kept his own line busy, he said, but those of other local party leaders. Larry Sheehan, president of the Jackson County Democratic club, and Mrs. Elsie Werner, president of the Democratic Women's club echoed Boyer's statement and announced they had already sent messages to Morse on behalf of their orga nizations. ' ' - Echoing a challenge sounded by Senator Morse in his Port land speech Thursday night, the local Democratic chairman for mally invited . local liberal Re publicans and independents to follow Morse into the Democrat ic party. Boyer's wire on behalf of the Democratic party of Jackson county follows: "It is with , pride and grati tude that Jackson County Demo crats welcome you into our party and we pledge our all out sup port to your campaign for re election to the U.S. Senate in nineteen-fifty six." 4-H Ciiliews Central Point Club Central Point Button . and Bows 4-H Clothing club met February 11 at the home of Mrs. Paul ' Snook. Sen. Morse Returns To Washington; Many Comment on Washington (U.R) Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon, who was regarded as an Independent when he left here Thursday for a visit to his home state, re turned to his congressional du ties as a Democrat Saturday. The senator arrived by United Airlines plane early yesterday morning from Portland, Ore. Morse conferred in Salem briefly Friday before going to Eugene for a visit in his home town. While in Salem he conferred briefly with Democrat leaders on his 1956 campaign plans and was guest at a coffee hour at the home of Charles Jens. Change Greenville, S. C. (U.R) Maj. Gen. Chester E. McCarty, commanding officer of the Eighteenth Air Force, declined to comment Saturday on reports he may run against Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon next year. McCarty's headquarters is at Donaldson Air Force Base here. Morse, who switched from Re publican to Independent to Democratic Party affiliation, has been quoted at saying Gen. Mc Carty, a native of Oregon is one Timberline Lodge Negotiations End; Reopening Unlikely Portland (U.R) Negotiations between the Forest Service and Timberline Lodge, Inc., were broken off late Friday, and the corporation attorney said it' ap peared highly improbable the lodge would be reopened in the near future. Rueben Lenske, lodge attor ney, said the negotiations were undertaken in an attempt to ob tain Forest Service permission to operate the lodge until Feb. 22. The resort was ordered closed to guests after the Sandy Elec tric Co-operative shut off elec tric service. Lenske said the lodge man agement had hoped to have the Mt. Hood resort open over the Washington holiday, when at least 200 skiers from Washing ton state were expected to use the ski facilities. Tokyo (U.R) A U. S. Air Force F86 Sabrejet Saturday crashed into farmland area while preparing to land at Ka- maki Air Ease."J The pilot was killed. of several men most often men tioned as possible candidates against him next year. Washington (U.R) Demo cratic National Chairman Paul M. Butler said Friday . Sen. Wayne Morse's decision to be come a Democrat proves there it no room in the Republican party for "an independent a lib eral, or an enlightened conserva tive." Will Convince Many ' Butler, in a letter welcoming the Oregon Senator into the Democratic fold, said Morse's "example will have the effect of convincing - countless - thinking Americans that they can best serve their highest hopes ;for America by active enlistment in the Democratic party." Morse bolted the GOP in 1952 and campaigned for Democrat Adlai E.. Stevenson .for Presi dent. He then became an Inde pendent. His single , vote last month gave the Democrats con trol of the Senate in : the 84th Congress. Will Support Morse Senate Democrats : also wel comed Morse into the party. Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said he would support Morse in 1956 and predicted his re-election. Neuberger said Morse cculd still be "independent" while a member of the Demo cratic party. Sen. Earle C. Clements acting Senate Democratic leader, said "the Democratic party is big enough, broad enough for any one who is interested in prog ress of this country to become a member." "It can't be said he, Morse, took this step without doing everything possible to reform the Republican party," Kefau ver said. Washington (U.R) The con version of Sen. The for mer Republican, and more re cently an Independent, will seek re-election as a Democrat but warned he still plans to vote as he sees fit. 516 Delivered to Legislature; 73 Drafts Submitted Salem (U.R) Requests for drafting 539 bills are still to be carried out by the legislative counsel. It was announced Sat urday. Sam Haley, legislative coun sel, said he had delivered 516 bills to the Legislature and in addition had submitted 73 rough drafts of bills. The 73 drafts are included in the countvQf 539 bills yet to be prepared. Still More Bill In addition there will be some 20 to 30 ov more bills, drafted by the ways and means commit tee staff, to be introduced, car rying appropriations for the 1955-57 biennium. On top of this are 100 or so bills drafted by the Oregon State Bar staff or by some attorney at request of a legislator. In the 1953 session a total of 1215 bills in both the Senate and House were introduced. Must Be Cleared . Although all bills from now on must be cleared through the Rules Committee in each cham ber, veteran observers here look for a total of bills at least equal to the total in 1953 with indica tions there might be more this session. . Expanded Aid Plan For Asia Approved Chicago (U.R) A new ex panded aid program for Asia has been approved by top adminis trative officials and should be before Congress by April, Har old E." Stassen, Foreign Opera tions administrator, has reveal ed. Stassen, at a news conference Friday, . declined to disclose the cost of the new program for Asia but said the total program falls within the approximate $3, 500,000,000 recommended in the President's budget for overseas aid. .. . On agriculture Art Straus reported that the dairy producers had taken a con siderable cut in price on Nov. 15 with very little of the price drop being passed on to the consumer. Considerable Talent alfalfa seed had been sent to Greece at 30 cents per pound, 500 tons of seed was wanted by Greece this year. Common al falfa seed had netted growers 34 cents and wheat was a bit above the $72 a ton support level. Lester James stated that Bangs disease in Oregon dairy cattle was at a low point being less than one-half of one per cent, and. that stock cattle would soon be tested for Brucellosis. The catch, said Urey, is: "who will watch them to see that they do what they ask the others to do?" . The University of Chicago sci entist said, in commenting on the Soviet Union proposal for destruction of all nuclear wea pons, that "if there is adequate inspection provided in the new Russian proposal, I'm all for it."
