Sen. Morse Returns
To Washington; Many
Comment on
Washington (U.R) Sen.
Wayne Morse of Oregon, who
was regarded as an Independent
when he left here Thursday for
a visit to his home state, re
turned to his congressional du
ties as a Democrat Saturday.
The senator arrived by United
Airlines plane early yesterday
morning from Portland, Ore.
Morse conferred in Salem
briefly Friday before going to
Eugene for a visit in his home
town.
While in Salem he conferred
briefly with Democrat leaders on
his 1956 campaign plans and
was guest at a coffee hour at
the home of Charles Jens.

Greenville, S. C. (U.R)
Maj. Gen. Chester E. McCarty,
commanding officer of the
Eighteenth Air Force, declined
to comment Saturday on reports
he may run against Sen. Wayne
Morse of Oregon next year.
McCarty's headquarters is at
Donaldson Air Force Base here.
Morse, who switched from Re
publican to Independent to
Democratic Party affiliation, has
been quoted at saying Gen. Mc

Timberline Lodge
Negotiations End;
Reopening Unlikely
Portland (U.R) Negotiations
between the Forest Service and
Timberline Lodge, Inc., were
broken off late Friday, and the
corporation attorney said it' ap
peared highly improbable the
lodge would be reopened in the
near future.
Rueben Lenske, lodge attor
ney, said the negotiations were
undertaken in an attempt to ob
tain Forest Service permission to
operate the lodge until Feb. 22.
The resort was ordered closed
to guests after the Sandy Elec
tric Co-operative shut off elec
tric service.
Lenske said the lodge man
agement had hoped to have the
Mt. Hood resort open over the
Washington holiday, when at
least 200 skiers from Washing
ton state were expected to use
the ski facilities.

Washington (U.R) Demo
cratic National Chairman Paul
M. Butler said Friday . Sen.
Wayne Morse's decision to be
come a Democrat proves there
it no room in the Republican
party for "an independent a lib
eral, or an enlightened conserva
tive." Will Convince Many '
Butler, in a letter welcoming
the Oregon Senator into the
Democratic fold, said Morse's
"example will have the effect of
convincing - countless - thinking
Americans that they can best
serve their highest hopes ;for
America by active enlistment in
the Democratic party."
Morse bolted the GOP in 1952
and campaigned for Democrat
Adlai E.. Stevenson .for Presi
dent. He then became an Inde
pendent. His single , vote last
month gave the Democrats con
trol of the Senate in : the 84th
Congress.
Will Support Morse
Senate Democrats : also wel
comed Morse into the party. Sen.
Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.)
said he would support Morse in
1956 and predicted his re-election.
Neuberger said Morse
cculd still be "independent"
while a member of the Demo
cratic party.
Sen. Earle C. Clements acting
Senate Democratic leader, said
"the Democratic party is big
enough, broad enough for any
one who is interested in prog
ress of this country to become a
member."
"It can't be said he, Morse,
took this step without doing
everything possible to reform
the Republican party," Kefau
ver said.
Washington (U.R) The con
version of Sen. Wayne Morse of
Oregon, from Republican to In
dependent to Democrat, gave
Sen. Sam J. Ervin (D-N.C.) a
chance for a little evangelism.
Offers Others Chance
"As one licensed by the Demo
cratic party to convert . politi
cal sinners to righteousness," Er
vin drawled across the senate's
aisle, "I offer any other member
of the Republican party oppor
tunity to confess his past politi
cal inequities, get right with the
Lord and join the Democratic
party."
;The only GOP Senator pres
ent , was , William Langer (R-
N.D.), who just chewed his unlit
cigar.

' WE HAVE THE ANSWERS TO YOUR '
' QUESTIONS ON
Q. What is sfflbestrel?
A, It is a synthetic hormone which has been
made commercially for years and used
' in human and veterinary medicine. '
Q. Why feed stilbestrol le cattle?
A. When properly mixed at the right level "
in a well-balanced supplement, itilbei

on less feed.
Q. What are the results from stilbestre!
feeding?
A. At the Purina Research Farm an average
of test results with stilbestrol shows
. 17.2 faster growth and a saving in
.feed of 9.4 against check lots getting .
v no stilbestrol. .
Q. Why is Purina' Micro-Mix!n important
r- tv the cattle feeder? ?
A. Micro-Mixing assures the feeder that ,
every bite is mixed just right. Every steer
gets his share so he can make maximum
daily gains you market an even bunch
of cattle.
Q. Is stilbestrol a feed nutrient?
A. Definitely not. Actually stilbestrol makes
r it even more important to feed a well
: balanced supplement like Steer Fatena
or Beef Chow because cattle are gaining
so rapidly.
Q. What basic rations shew reipense when,
fed with a supplement containing stil
bestrol? A. Well-balanced supplements fed with
