Sweetheart's Ball

The campus of Southern Ore
gon college was given over to
gaiety the evening of February 12,
for it was the night of the annua!
Sweetheart's ball. Sponsored by the
SOC chapter of Future Teachers of
America, the ball is given each year
near St. Valentine's day.
Coeds wore their prettiest eve
ning frocks and Churchill hall where
the dance was held was decked with
pert cupids and red hearts pierced
with the traditional arrow of love.
During the evening Bob Myrick,
freshman from Ashland, was
crowned King of Hearts and his
date, Miss Mary Jean Davis, also a
freshman from Ashland, was crown
ed queen of hearts. They received
their symbols of office from Miss
Peggy Rutter, junior from Medford,
who was Queen of Hearts last year,
and Charles Plummer, junior from
Roseburg, 1954 King of Hearts.

After a coed has made herself beautiful for the exciting evening and donned her fluffy dancing frock, the next big mo
ment is the arrival of her date and opening of the corsage box. Here Herb Colley, student from Medford, presents a big
orchid to his sweetheart of the evening, Miss Pat Abbott, Ashland, who shows by her expression that it is a thrilling

Bob Anglim, (at left) graduate of Asbury Park High school in New
Jersey and now from Grants Pass, and Lloyd Olson, -Roseburg, meet
their dates, Miss Marlys Price and Miss Phyllis Connell, both from Simi,
Calif., at Susanne Homes hall where. the two girls live on campus.
Dr. Phyllis Plichta, faculty member and popular housemother at the men's dormi
tory, was escorted to the dance by. Herbie Yamanaka, junior from Hawaii.' Dr.
Plichta's corsage of freckled vanda orchids came from the Yamanaka gardens in
Hawaii where they were planted by the student several years ago.
