ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Correspondent Washington Oregon Repub licans here were jubilant over selection of San Francisco as the site of the party's 1956 na tional convention, hoping its nearness to home will infuse the party rank and file with the necessary spirit to make a successful comeback in the sena torial contest coming up against Sen. Wayne Morse. The convention which will select the GOP presidential and vice - presidential candidates is expected by State Chairman Ed Boehnke to attract many spe cial trains and buses from all over Oregon, taking ; the party clan to the party's biggest clam bake. Boehnke foresees many of the faithful taking their vaca tiohs in August next year in or der to make the Bay area con vention. By the time the Republicans have rung down the curtain after four or five days of drum beat ing, speechmaking and intra- party transfusions of confidence, it will be nearly Labor Day, the traditional time for opening presidential election campaigns, as well as those on the state level. Republicans, in a word, have higher hopes now that they will swing into their campaign to un seat Morse with a full head of steam, regardless of whom they have nominated in the spring primary to be the GOP chal lenger. Speculation, meanwhile, about the Republican "most likely to succeed" against Morse has pick ed up in the last two weeks in party circles here, although there is general agreement that no one at this point is completely head and shoulders above the rest of the party crowd. The recent story printed by the Seattle Times that Gov. Paul Patterson was approached by President Eisenhower or his close associates at the White House recently in an effort to persuade Patterson to run against Morse is now generally regarded by Oregon Republicans here as a phoney. Yet. Patterson is regarded as the man to beat for the nomina tion, if he wants it. There is one reservation mentioned here among veteran officials: that as long as the Oregon legislature is in session, anything can happen to the governor's prospective appeal as a Senate candidate next year. The governor's edge, as seen by most observers, stems from his handsome victory last fall over Democrat Joe Carson, fol lowing his record shattering pri mary margin over State Secre tary Earl Newbry. As one party cohort put it: "Who else do we have who has demonstrated that much strength in a statewide race?" One obvious answer to that question is Douglas McKay, popular, as governor of Oregon but generally thought to be less so today as secretary of the in- Western States GOP To Meet in Portland Washington (U.R) The Re publican Western States Con ference has voted to held its September meeting this year in Portland, Ore. Chairman Harlan I. Peyton, GOP national committeeman from Washington state, said the decision was made at a meeting of delegates from the 11 West ern states and Alaska and Ha waii. He said the meeting prob ably will be held the last week in September. Ed Boehnke, chairman of the Oregon Republican party, said the meeting . could be expected to attract between 300 and 400 party officials from the 11 West ern states. He said the meeting was ex pected to lay the groundwork for the area's participation in the Presidential nominating con vention scheduled to be held in San .Francisco. terior where he's borne the brunt of Demo charges of "give away" of natural resources by the Eisenhower administration. So McKay's name is seldom heard in current talk about sena torial candidates. Mention of the three Republi can members of Congress from Oregon is usually coupled with the observation that none has ever run statewide, strong as they may have become in their own congressional districts. Rep. Walter Norblad in recent years has piled up big reelection margins in the first district (Northwest Oregon), and Rep. Harris Ellsworth has won with heavy victory margins in all of his campaigns in the fourth district (Southwest Oregon). In Democratic circles, the GOP search is being watched with intense interest and some amuse ment, the latter because they enjoy seeing the shoe on the other foot for a change after experiencing many such quests themselves in the past. Today, millions of. Americans are using credit, and installment pur chasing, to advantage. So long as intelligent, sound budgeting is practiced, and a sensible approach to credit is taken, we need not wor ry about the fact that credit and in stallment buying are at an all-time high, economists say. Why not? Here is one important reason: While installment buying has in creased, so have the number of sys tematic savings accounts! In other words, more and more people, are practicing installment buying in re verse. Just as they make periodic payments on, say, a home loan, they also make periodic payments into savings accounts.
