Immediately after the holiday season the mail brought numer- ous inquiries. concernmg the number of c a 1 o r i es or "food value" of alcoholic b e v e r a g es. This sudden interest in the effects of crapulence on nutrition, good looks, VltA flirt 'inn- Dr. Brr al' efficiency and longevity suggests, the re morse of the morning after. Why else should any one care how many calories in his tipple? In general, -wine contains two to four times as much alcohol as beer, but less carbohydrate. The carbohydrate in beer consists of maltose and dextrin. Maltose is a kind of sugar pro duced by the germination (with warmth and moisture) of grain, usually barley, and by fermen tation of the starch in the grain. Dextrin is a gummy carbohy drate formed as an intermediate product in the decomposition of the starch in the grain by heat, acids or enzymes. Both maltose and dextrin yield the same num ber of calories as sugar. The sweet wines contain ap proximately a teaspoonful of su gar to the ounce or three tea spoonfuls in the glass of wine. Dry wines contain little or no sugar. - . According to Food and Bever age Analyse by M. A. Bridges, B. S., M. D., F. A. C. P.,'(Lea & Febiger) various kinds of beer yield from 100 to 135 to the glass a ' standard measuring cupful A glass (winegtessf ul, about 3 ounces) of champagne 90 calories, port wine 165 calor ies, Rhine wine, 70 . calories, claret - 60 calories. ' A glass (brandy glass, 30 cc, about an ounce) of brandy 70 calories, Bourbon or rye whiskey 85 cal ories, hard cider 40 calories. These figures are the calori facient effects of the beverages if we assume that all the sugar and all the alcohol is burned in the body. All of the sugar in alcoholic beverages or in soft drinks may be: burned in the body, that is, utilized to produce heat or mus- KPs Join in Highway Courtesy Designation The Knights of Pythias, long active in traffic safety cam paigns, have joined with Gov. When the odor of alcohol is in the breath, the individual has taken more than he can utilize and he is "under the influence," or "slightly in toxicated" or just plain 'drunk" depending on the extent of overindulgence. . The caloric, or fuel value of alcohol is greater than that of carbohydrate (starch, sugar) or protein (lean meat, egg white, milk curd, the nitrogenous con stituent of nuts and vegetables) but less than that of oil or fat. Webster says food is nutritive material - which, absorbed or taken into the body, serves for purposes of growth,' work or re pair and for maintenance of the vital processes. Food serves another purpose, not mentioned by Webster. It supplies heat. Whatever the old timbers and old soaks thought or think about it, we know that any one can en dure exposure to extreme cold better without alcohol.. Now if you suspect I'm a (in sert appropriate adjectives) tee total abstainer your suspicion is well founded, and if you think I'm rabid on the subject of alco holic indulgence you're right again.
