Measures in Oregon Legislature Salem (U.R) ' An interim committee to study expenditures of candidates and nonpolitical organizations participating in behalf of or against candidates or measures would be created under terms of a Senate joint resolution. It was introduced by Sens. J. O. Johnson (R-Tigard), Steward Hardie (R-Condon) and Lowell Steen (R-Milton-Freewater), and Reps.. W. W. Chadwick R Salem), Herman Chingren (R Molalla), Earl Hill (R-Cushman) and Arthur P. Ireland (R-Forest Grove). Sen. Johnson said he does not believe there should be a limita tion of expenditures on individ ual candidates or committes un less corporations and other or ganized groups also are re stricted. Hill said the present corrupt practices act is "archaic" and a committee should make a thor ough study of it and report rec ommendations to the 1957 legislature. Salem (U.R) The Oregon Senate has approved the legal izing of radar as a means to de tecting speeding motorists, with out argument, but with five "no" votes. Sen. Warren McMinimee (R Tillamook) said 42 states are al ready using radar. He said that there was some discussion as to whether use of the device was in violation of the Oregon speed trap law, but said there appear ed to be a difference between measuring off a certain distance (as in a speed-trap) and timing a motorist by the radar device as he passes a certain point. Another measure passed by the Senate with only two dis senting votes would give air lines the right to serve liquor by the drink,' as it now is sold on railroads. A house bill to provide an ed ucation program for Klamath Indians as they go from reserva tion status to full citizenship status was approved unanimous ly after Sen. Charles W. Ging ner (R-LaGrande) said -the fed eral government would provide the funds to employ a director at $7500 a year to carry on the educational work. Salem (U.R) A Senate "fact finding" committee with broad investigative powers would be created under terms of a resolu tion being prepared by Sens. Pat Lonergan (R-Portland) and Harry D. Boivin (D-Klamath Falls). The resolution will substitute for an earlier one directed pri marily against -un-American ac tivities. Sen. Lonergan said the proposed committee, which would make an interim study and report to the 1957 Legisla ture, "definitely will not be a witch-hunting group." Salem (U.R) The House Tax-1 ation Committee has under con sideration a bill that would tax property of inland water trans portation companies on a mile age basis in the companies where those companies operate. The bill was dropped in the House hopper by Rep. Katherine Musa (D-The Dalles) at the re quest of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce and Port Commission. The bill provides that where watercraft is headquartered in Oregon but is used outside th state, assessments of its property shall be upon the proportion of the tax year in which the prop erty is actually in the state. mm TjTJTTjijTjT UJlUUii SEECH 4-H Club News Sew-a-Sliich Club The club met Feb. 3, with the president, Georgie Mitchell, pre siding."
